jlinclay, November 9, 1947 'Religion in Life Week Schedule Five Speakers For Ag Campus Convos Four major convocations will highlight "Religion in Life Week activities on Ag campus, Nov. 9-11. Featured speakers for the three day "week, Monday through Wednesday will be Dr. Julian Hartt, Miss Ruth Packard. Dr. Joseph Nelson, Rev. John A. O'Brien and Dr. G. S. Nichols, ac cording to Dale Stauffer, RcMfeious council member in charge of Ag campus. t Dr. Hartt, keynote speaker for , the week, will address all unaf filiated students in a convocation to be held in the Dairy Building at 7:30 on Monday evening. At the same hour all organized houses will have speakers, conforming with plans on city campus. The Rev. John A. O'Brien, Philosophy professor at Notre Dame University will address a gathering of all Catholic students Tuesday morning at 11:00 a. m. in the Ag Student Union. Chinese Authority. Tuesday night at 7:30, Miss Packard will address the weekly meeting of YM-YW in the Home Ec parlors. Miss Packard s the regional director of the National YWCA, and is an authority on the Chinese student movement The closing session will be a seminar from 4-5:30 p. m. on VrfnsHflv in the Home Ec rar- lors with Dr. Nelson presiding. He is an expert on Rural sociology, and is executive secretary of the Nebraska Bantist Board of Edu cation. His interests revolve Religious Week C2 Leaders to Hold Special Meets During the three days of "Re ligion in Life Week," Nov. 10, 11, and la all nine leaders engaged for the "week" will be available to students for personal confer ences. Conference hour is 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. each day. The main purposes of these con ferences is to furnish an oppor tunity for students to become bet ter acquainted with these men and women than is possible at the con vocations and seminars. If students wish it, the period may be used for personal guidance. Dual Purpose But the purpose is "two-way," Donald Crowe, president of the Religious Welfare Council, em phasized. Speakers in the past have indicated a desire to know students better on the campuses where they speak. Conferences are really "pet-acquainted" ses sions. Individuals or small groups de siring conferences may sign up for them on printed schedules in the Union lobby. Rev, Sam Maicr To Speak Monday A special Monday night convo cation at 7:30 p.m. for students who do not live in organized houses including married stu dents, town students, and mem bers of organizations other than Greek-letter will present as the featured speaker Rev. Sam Maier, well-known Presbyterian student pastor. Scene of the' convocation is Emmanuel Methodist Church, 15th and U streets, opposite Bancroft School The Rev. Mr. Maier's topic will be, "Christian Marriage and Family life." around young people and he has had wide experience in the fields of religion as related to philosophy and psychology. Added Features. Added features of the Ag pro gram will be two early morning sessions to be held at 8:00 a. m on Tuesday and Wednesday, Tuesday's program will present Dr. Nelson as speaker, and wed' nesday Dr. Nichols, director of the Wesley Foundation at Iowa State College will preside. Dr. Nelson's talk will concern rural sociology, problems relating to rural life. while Dr. Nichols will be con cerned with international rela tions. These meetings will begin promptly at 8 and will dismiss in time for first period classes. 7 Workshops Bolster Animal Religion Week Seven seminars, workshops in applying principles of religion to many phases of everyday living, will form the concrete crux of "Religion in Life Week," which opens this evening with a convo cation and continues with varied activities through Wednesday night Eight outstanding religious leaders will direct the dicussions in each of the seven seminars, contributing information and an swers to students' questions on topics ranging from happiness in marriage to establishing personal religious faith. Each of the semi nar topics will be discussed for three' afternoon from 4 to 5:30 p. m. in various locations over the campus, so that students may at tend several interest groups dur ing the "week." A student chair man will moderate each discus sion following the leader's talks. Perennially Popular Topic A popular topic in every year's "Religion In Life Week" is "Inter-faith Understanding.' Speak ers for this subject will shift each day, giving various denomination al leaders an opportunity to clar ify the differences and similari ties between denominations, and thereby bring about an under standing that can lead to co-operation. A second discussion seminar whose speakers will change day to day, is called "Religion Faces World Problems," which will in turn present a Presbyterian di rector of the Westminster Founda NOTABLE The toast of the tampus is Nancy. Starts National Leaders To Address Student Body Through Nov. 13 'Religion in life Week," an an-1 nual project of the Religious Wel fare Council which brings to the campus each year prominent na tional religious leaders, officially opens at 8 p.m. tonight with a campus-wide convocation in the Union Ballroom. The convocation will present Dr. Julian N. Hartt, Yale professor of philosophy, as key note speaker. His topic will be "What is This Which We Be lieve?" Dr. C. H. Carrying the general credo theme, "This We Believe," the week will get underway Monday with the program of class room appointments by the various speakers, initial meetings of dis cussion groups at 4 p.m. with per sonal conferences arranged from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. and with dinner guest speakers at organized houses and dormitories. A special convo cation for unaffiliated students, townspeople and non-Greek letter organizations will be held at Em manuel Methodist Church, 15th and "U" streets. Tuesday and Wednesday will follow the same outline, varying only with the evening program. On Tuesday Protestant, Catholic and Jewish denominational groups will hold separate meetings from 6 to 9 p.m., and there will be special convocations at Husker ville and at Ag campus. The clos ing all-university convocation will be held in Temple Theater Wed nesday at 8 p.m. when Dr. Hartt will again be the main speaker. Other Speakers Other speakers are: Dr. Abraham Cronbach, pro fessor of philosophy at Hebrew Seminary, Cinncinatti, Jewish leader in social action and re form; Dr. William J. Hutchins, president of Danforth Foundation, former president of Berea College, and father of President Robert M. Hutchins of Chicago Univer sity; Rev. Dr. John A, O'Brien, Ph. D., professor of philosophy at Notre Dame, author of works in philosophy, religion, and science. Miss Ruth Packard, .social worker in China and now re gional director of the National Student YWCA; Dr. John H. Pat ton, Westminister Foundation pas tor at Kansas University, airforce chaplain, and Ph. 'D, in Seman tics; Dr. G. S. Nichols, Wesley Foundation director at Iowa State; Dr. Ruth Wick of the Na tional Lutheran Council, marriage counselor and Lutheran student service commission executive; and Dr. Joseph O.
