PAGE 4 ' t V ft ;i '.,v: ' ; V! i :'. ... u i 'V;; ;) Women Asked To Participate In UN Debate Women will be Invited to par ticipate in interstate debate for the fifth consecutive year at the In itial meeting of the University de baters Wednesday, Sept. 80, at 7:15 p. m. in Room 201 Temple, Coach Donald Olson has an nounced. Until 1942, only two women had represented the university in an interstate debate. In the fall of 1941, under the leadership of Dr. Leroy T. Laase women were asked to participate in debate for the first time in forty years. Much Controversy. The question of admitting wo men to the debate squad has been a subject of much controversy. When the Debating Association was being reorganized in the fall of 1901, the word "male" was struck from the membership clause by a vote of 14 to 7. From the Daily Nebraskan of Nov. 11, 1901, comes the comment: "The (debate) session last night was a stormy one and consider able wrangling was indulged in. Some of the arguments against ad mitting women to the debate team charged that the women who had been in the association had taken advantage of their sex and that one of them had not paid dues wed to the association!" The basis of admission of wo men to the debate squad which has existed since 1941 is based on the lack of a definite rule in the university prohibiting women from participating in intercollegi ate debate. Whether or not there is a woman's debate team this year will depend on how many Interested and competent women debaters turn out. Psi Chi.
