Wednesday, April 30, 1947 THE DAILY NEBRASKAN Paqe 3 niBJ JTIKEIP LriBGffiOEjr Or George Miller Just for the record, the Big Six bridge championship was won by the Kansas University cardsharks. It took an overtime period to de termine the winner, for the Jay hawks and Kansas State were tied for first at the end of the regulation tournament held in Lincoln. A traveling trophy was given to the winner by the Nebraska Stu dent Union. More small stuff: Thurlo McCrady, new athletic director at Kansas State, has been unable to locate a house in Man hattan and as a result his wife and family are still living in Brookings, S. D. McCrady was the athletic boss and head football and basketball coach at South Dakota State before accepting the Wild cat offer. A new position has been cre ated in the Iowa State athletic family. Ray Donels, head football coach at the Ames school prior to the arrival of Mike Michalske, has been taken on as athletic contact man. It will be Donel's job to contact athletes with the idea of inducing them to continue their studies at Iowa State. During the war Don els was the officer in charge of athletics at the Ottumwa Navy Base at Ottumwa, Iowa. His con tacts there should serve him in good stead when he begins his re cruiting drive. Record crowds are the rule rather than the exception for Iowa State's baseball appearances. In three home games against Iowa State Teachers and' Simp son, the Cyclones have attracted 3,586 fans. Nebraska's league-leading Big Six nine played at Ames in a two game series, and the resulting throng must have set a new rec ord at the Cyclone school. Pre vious high mark was 1,317 for the first game of the Iowa Teachers series. Two members of the UCLA football team who were mighty important in the Uclan grid ma chine last fall have shifted their talents to the baseball diamond during the spring. Speedy Cal Rossi holds down first base for the Bruins while "Skip" Rowland is the regular second sacked. Both players made certain that Illinois - was not on the UCLA baseball slate before joining the squad. With such a heavy schedule of intramural athletic events on tap for university teams, Lou Means' intramural office is running into difficulty in drawing up playoff schedules. Some organizations are participating in three or four sports and it takes careful plan ning to avoid any conflicts. Volleyball, water polobadmin ton, softball, golf, tennis and horseshoe are now under way on the intramural front. Minnesota football followers are preparing for a bit "of elation in years to come. After , floundering in the gridiron doldrums during most of the war years, the Gold en Gophers seem ready to break loose with their old fervor. Only one senior is listed for service on the 1947 Minnesota football edition, and with such talented sophomores as Billy Bye and Mark Heffelfinger on hand, the Norsemen will be set to cause some disturbance in Big Nine ranks for several season. Just in case you forget, Ne braska will be in a position to feel the Gopher power. Minnesota will be the second Scarlet foe next fall, coming to Lincoln on October 4, a week after the Indiana curtain raiser which will also be played on Husker soiL t"ST PI Phi pin. Rough Work For Gridders Husker footballers did not wait until Friday to engage in a scrim mage session. Instead, Coach Ber nie Masterson sent his pupils through a lengthy contact drill against the Nubbins on the fresh man drill yard west of the coli seum Tuesday afternoon. A potent aerial game highlight ed the varsity showing, for Quar terbacks Dick Thompson and Sam Vacant! were hitting receivers with regularity. Vacant! wasted no time getting into the swing of things, for he took part in the rough stuff on his second night of practice. Although the field was not marked, Vacanti was able to com plete lengthy heaves to Ends Jim McWilliams and Ralph Damkroger which would have been close to touchdown length. Salestrom Goes.
