to the Kansas Jayhawks by a slim
three-point margin in a meet that
Was not settled until the final
event, the mine relay. Victory in
this race gave the KU thinclads
the championship with Coach Ed

Altho the conference meet is stiil
a few weeks in the future, early
attempts to preaict tne imt cnam
pion are not out of order.
Several definite weaknesses are
present in the Nebraska team at
the present writlnr. With Dick
Piderit ineligible, the Scarlet
ireieht corps Is scarcely visible
Piderit took third in the Indoor
shot put and was improving; stead
y. The Huskers' outdoor show
infs have produced no point win
ners in either the discus or shot
to take up the slack.
Another weakness will be pres
ent if Loyal Hurlbert is unable
to get back into the good graces
of his instructors. The Ord fresh
man is temporarily inelegible, but
there is hope that he may be free
to compete when the outdoor meet
rolls around. Quartermile, half
rr.ile and mile relay events will
suffer if Hurlbert is kept out of
action.
Coach Tom Botts' Missouri
Tigers look to be a major force
In the conference championship.
With four top-notch hurdlers,
sprinter Harry Guth, weight ex
perts Mel Sheehan and Ed Quirk
and Dirk Killough, a better-than-average
880 man, the Bengals will
rate plenty of attention.
The Huskers only track appear
ance before the Big Six meet

souri and Wisconsin entered in a
triangular, the affair will include
several athletes capable of cut
ting a fancy figure in the NCAA

Join Gridders
A pair of new gridders joined
the Scarlet football squad for the
last week t of workouts, as Coach
Bernie Masterson assembled his
charges for the last Monday ses
sion of thespring season.
Not Strangers.
Neither of the late arrivals was
a stranger to the Husker foothali
scene, but both have been absent
during the previous spring prac

Ardiie Means, line vet who let
tered In 1943 were the fresh faces
noticeable In Monday's work. Va
canti, who had intended tn rr a fi
liate and play professionad foot
ball next season, rejected a bid
from the New York Giants and
will be back in Scarlet livery
during the 1947 season.
Means played a lot of tackle
for the Merchant 'Marine Acad
emy during the Dast season and
was a standout -high school player
at Lincoln high during his prep
days.

Slincin' Sam wasted no time
getting started, and was firing
passes with the rest of the quar
terbacks during an aerial drill
Monday afternoon. Means too
was in the thick of a contact ses
sion which Line Coach Tony Bla
zine had prepared for his for
wards. A Nubbins backfield consisting
of Ray Churchill, quarterback;
Bob Long and Red Neihart, half
backs, and Bob Scoville, fullback,
was brought up from the frosh
drill yard to serve as the target
for a varsity line defensive work
out.

Conlcst Open

The intramural golf driving
contest will take place today on
the west side of the university
coliseum from three to six. All
contestants must bring their own
balls. Because of the many fine
golfers on the campus this year
the competition will be stiff and
the winner will need a hefty wal
lop to walk off with first place
honors.
Both distance and areurarv will
be needed bv the winners n tvm
fairway will be marked off with
boundaries on both sides. Stakes
will be put up at various distances
for convenience in marking.
Entrants were not reonir in
sign up in advance for the one
day contest leaving the Dlav tndav
wide open to all.
