Page 6 THE DAILY NEBRASKAN Thursday, March 20, 1947 t't ,1 U IDGIHlLDirEJ Br George Miller Nebraska football followers may think they are seeing things when they take a look at the Scarlet gridders during spring practice periods. Joe Partington, sterling center on last fall's team, and a threat for all -Big Six honors until a "broken hand halted him late in the season, has moved into the ranks of the quarterbacks. Tho .Toe has not been active in backfirld duties during any part of his collegiate career, he did uncork some fleet-footed tactics while playing for North Carolina Tre-Fliffht against Navy in 1945. During the contest Joe gobbled up a Navy fumble and zoomed to the touchdown which defeated the Middies. To make up for Partington's shift, husky Tom Novak, a bruis ing fullback if there ever was one, has stepped up to the center ranks. Novak's vicious line backing abil ity will not be lost by the trans fer, but it will be up to the Scarlet coaching staff to uncover another fullback powered by the same caliber of explosives as Novak seemed to possess. A third link is included in the chain of changes, for Dale Adams, promising Randolph freshman halfback last fall, has been in cluded in the fullback list. Adams is ( Vf"-?. JIM MYERS One of the Ne braska halfbacks falling into the "speedy but short" classifica tion. The York athlete was one of the best runners for the Huskcrs last fall. started the 1946 season with the varsity, but was sent to the Nub bins for more seasoning. No players have shifted to halfback to replace Adams, but a couple of newcomers have captured the eye of observers. Bill Mueller, trigger - quick starter who performed with the Corpus Christi service team last fall, has shown to. advantage in early workouts, and Charlie Har rington, Auburn back who was among the nation's top ten pass receivers while playing at Wash ington & Lee last season, is an other take-notice newcomer. Still another transfer is the movement of Fran Mandula from he end prospects to the guard squad. Mandula figures to use his bulk1 to better advantage at a guard berth. Whether or not the changes will be permanent is another thing. Partington will have to develop into a passer to handle the T formation quarterback slot with top efficiency. Novak's absence from the fullback ranks means that someone else will have to step forward as a line crasher. Stfll another problem is Adams' absence from the halfback posi tion where his height could be used with good effect. Nebraska halfbacks last fall were notable for their lack of height when it came to pass de fense. Dick Hutton, Bill Moo mey, Jim Myers and Cletus Fischer were not able to outleap the opposition's bigger ends and backs for passes, and Adams' 6 feet 1 Inch stature would come in mighty handy. All of the foregoing transfers are to be expected during spring workouts, for coaches have enough time to experiment with the play ers, and the changes may not be permanent. The shifts are appre ciated tho, for they furnish fresh news from what usually is an essential but hardly sensational part of building a football team. "If the con ference football race is as tough as this spring practice weather, next season sure will be a rough one." The speaker was George Sauer, pilot of last year's co-champion Kansas football club who gave the school its best grid season in 35 years. The big coach meant every word of it too as he looked out his office window on the second floor of Robinson gym at another mid-March snow fiurry. "It's the worst I've ever seen," Sauer continued. We had to post pone the opening: of sprinng prac tice a week and then when we do fret started we're held up further by snow and rain." So far spring practice in the Jayhawker camp has been limited almost entirely to viewing movies, exchanging diagrams .and plan ning experiments in personnel.
