According: to the Daily Cali
fornian a student at the Univer
sity of California played a game
of gin rummy with a coed the
other day, and when the game
was over she looked at him "and
said shyly. "Gee, I like to play
bridge with you!"

The director of the student
health program at Georgia Tech
has proposed that the student
body be offered voluntary im
munization against influenza, and
has asked for student opinion on
the subject, lie reports that the
flu shots are 80 percent effective,
and remain effective from three to
five months. Cost of the shots
would be 50 cents.
Inflation is here at last, reports
the Utah Chronicle. The predic
tions of politicians and economics
professors have come true at last.
As proof, the paper cites the juke
box situation. A juke box, it
says, is no longer satisfied with a
nickle. It insists on a dime.
"The juke-box operators through
out the country decided that, with
the higher cost of materials, etc.,
a nickle could no longer do the
job. They feel that they have a
right to get on the gravy train
along with the miners and steel
workers and automobile workers,"
the paper comments.
President Eisenhower of Kansas
State College, has put in a request
for 205 additional faculty mem
bers for the first year of the bien
nium and another 36 for the sec
ond year. He says that the new
staff members are needed to taKe
care of the estimated enrollments
of 7,500 and 8,000 respectively for
the two years. All except nine
of the members would be on the
teaching staff. The other nine
would include five counseling and
administrative workers and four
library assistants. The additional
faculty members would permit a
ratio of 14 students per teacher,
which is consistent with sound
education, President Eisenhower
reports. During the current year,
he says, the ratio is one instruc
tor for every 20 students, which
is far too high, but is consistent
with that of other schools. The
additions would give the school a
teaching staff of 531 the first year
of the biennium, and 567 for the
second year.
In an effort to provide enter
tainment for patients of the Vet
eran's hospital, the newly
installed Drake University chapter
of the American Red Cross, is
calling for student volunteers to
tfke part in talent shows to be
presented at the hospital once a
month. The chapter also sponsors
dances once a month for the vet
erans who are able to participate,
and sends workers to the hospital
to play cards and games with
the patients, and to play back
ground music for teas.
