Nebraska basketballers flashed plenty of promise as
they romped to a 68-37 win over a feeble South Dakota five
in their first start Wednesday night at the coliseum before
7,000 fans. Coach Harry Good, beginning his first season
as basketball coach at NU, sent four different combinations
onto the floor against the outmanned Coyotes as the Scarlet
cagers won with ease.
The Huskers starting five gave
indications of becomng a mighty
potent crew in later games as it
functioned smoothly for the first
game of the season. Center Rod
ney Cox and Forward Claude
Retherford led the Nebraska scor
ing parade with 12 points each as
the Scarlet quintet roared away to
an early lead and finished the first
half with a 34-13 margin.
With Joe Loisel and big Don
McArthur keeping the rebound
situation well in hand, the first
five was able to score as it wished
while the Sodaks stood far out
on the court and bombarded the
hoop with fruitless long shots.
Tom Luby, who paced the South
Dakota team against Nebraska last
year, was again the high scorer
for the visitors. He collected eight
points to lead Coach Rube Hoy's
squad.
The Nebraska first team had
piled up a 29 to 7 advantage when
Good sent a second five consisting
of Matt Keating: and Bob Cerv at
forwards, Waldo Winter at center
and Jim Sandstedt and Ken An
derson at guards, into action with
six' minutes remaining in the first
half.
Former Northeast ace Al Kirlin,
who played a semester of basket
ball for the Huskers before enter
ing the service a couple of years
ago, was standout among the
shock troopers who saw duty for
the Huskers. Kirlin dumped in
9 points during the six minutes he
played.
Others on the third combination
with Kirlin were Bob Means, Bob
Korte, Paul Shields, and Dale
Livingston.
Loisel got the Scarlet outfit off
to an early lead when he was sue
cessful on a free throw with a
minute gone. He followed this
up with a clean break for the hoop
after a pass from Cox to hang up
the first field goal of the game.
Early Lead.
After six minutes of play Ne
braska held a 11-4 lead and the
count mounted steadily as Rether
ford and Joe Brown found their
basketeye. Retherford, doing most
of his shooting from the left side
of the court, canned five field
goals in the fint half to effective
ly quell any Sodak chances.
Rod Cox provided the crowd
with a couple of thrills when he
patted two baskets, one In each,
half, from a half-sitting position
daring a descent to the floor. The
willowy pivot man was deadly
from in close, using turn shots
to good advantage.
Good's second combination was
far below the first string in ball
handling and shooting, but was
able to keep pace with the woeful
Coyotes who were unable to gen
erate any sustained scoring punch.
Brown Come Through.
The first five started the sec-
ond half, but left the contest after
ten minutes, sporting a 5 0 to 28
lend. Joe Brown provided the field
goal which put the Huskers at
the half-century mark just before
a new N.U. bunch entered the
game.
Nine of the Huskers" next 14
points were the work of Kirlin
who picked off a trio of field goals
and a like number of charity
tosses before leaving the game
with four minutes to go. At that
time the Nebraska margin had
bwn increased to 64-33.
The fans were anxious to see
the Scarlet hoopsters reach the
70-mark but Thurman Wright was
the only member of the fourth
unit able to dent the scoring col
umn during a wild and wooly
closing scramble and the game
ended with Nebraska two points
hy of the 70 total.
The Huskers will make their
next ?tart on Saturday when the
uttumwa Navy quintet comes to
Lincoln for a game on the coli
seum maples.
During the halftime intermis
sion Charlie Miller's gymnastic
squad entertained the fans with
an exhibition o fstunts, some of
which were not too different
from the basketball action during
parts of the game.

White Team Snows
Reds On Prelim Tut
The lid came off the 1946-47
basketball season Wednesday eve
ning at the Nebraska university
soliseum when Nubbins' coach
Tony Sharpe sent two teams into
action in an intra-squad game
prior to the Nebraska-South Da
kota tussle.
After getting off to a slow start
the Whites bombarded the gasket
throughout the game to amass a
total of 64 points as against the
Reds' 28. Both teams played a
fire-wagon brand of ball which
resulted in loose, sometimes
sloppy, play. However, there were
moments which showed that with
a little seasoning and experience
the Nubbins should have a better
than average ball club.
It took a little more than a
quarter for the Whites to get their
fast break working smoohly, but
by half time they had piled up
a 28-17 lead. Instrumental in
leading the attack were Joe Wil-
lians and Bernie Bieterman, both
of whom poured in six points
during the first half.
