(Friday, Februory 2, 1945 THE NEBRASKAN Wings Spank Doane Sailors 63-45 Tatum High With 27 With Goose Tatum scorching the nets for 27 points, the Wings f Lincoln Army Air Field out classed a scrappy Navy V-12 quint from Doane college Tues day night 63-45 in the second game of a double-header at the Nebraska coliseum. In his last five games, the Goose maintained a terrific scoring n totalling 101 points which . v- .i dangerous average el 20 points per game. With Tatum cutting the cords from all angles, aided by Ray Lumpp with 13 points and Ed Ehlers with 12, the Doane Blue Jackets didn't have a chance. It was the Wings 22nd victory out of 23 starts for the season. Score On Tip-Off. The Lincoln airmen started the scoring on the opening tip-off when Tatum tipped to Ehlers wno ariDDieo in ana made a beautiful over-hand pass to the Goose under the basket where he tipped the ball in for two points. Ray Lumpp next tallied with a lay-up after taking a pass Irom Krafft, before Fred Rich ardson of Doane dropped in a long one for the Bluejacket's lirst score of the game. At the end of 15 minutes the Wings had run the score to 34-14 with Goose Tatum playing the pivot spot to perfection, taking passes from his teammates to score at ease. Doane Scares Wings. As the second , period opened, the V-12 quintet managed to penetrate the Wing's defense witli better success. Rodney Cox, for mer Lincoln high star, led the way with six field goals, enabling the Bluejackets to run neck and neck with the high-flying Wings up until the final gun. The navy was out scored in the final period by only three points A long one by Bill Montgomery and a lay-up by Vic Krafft started the navy's spurt, with Cox add ing two points for Doane, while Tiiturn poured in two hook-shots for four points lor the Wings. Doane matched the Mings basket for basket until the final whistle, but it must be acknow ledged that the Lincoln soldiers, as usual, devoted the last moments of the game to a bit of unorthodox basketball.
