Friday. October 27, 1944 THE NEBRASKAN Lt. Jack Gaviii Dies in Battle Lt. Jack Gavin, '36, was killed in action Sept. 19 in the invasion of Holland, according to a war department telegram received re cently by his mother. Lieutenant Gavin is a gradu ate of UN, where he was affiu ated with Phi Kappa Psi. He en listed in the army in September, 1942, and went overseas in April, 1943. War Week . . . After listening to both Dewey and Roosevelt expound their views on U. S. participation in an international organization last week. Senator Joseph E. Ball's announcement followed similar decisions by Walter Lippmann, Russell Davenport, and the New York Times. Stirred by the swing toward I Roosevelt, Dewey Wednesday dis carded his farm speech and, fac ing foreign policy as the most im mediate problem, stated that U. S. participation "must not be sub ject to a reservation that would require our representative to re turn to congress for authority every time he had to make a de cision." He qualified this state ment by saying: "Obviously con gress, and only congress, has the constitutional power to determine what quota of force it will make available, and what discretion it will give our representative to use that force."
