.! : ( THE NEBRASKAN Army Didn't Clarify AST, s Princeton President Suncfay, March 12, 1944 Say In a signed article in the New York Herald Tribune last week, Dr. Harold W. Dodds. presi dent of Princeton university, writ ing about the recent curtailment of the AST Program, declared that "the army never succeeded in making clear to the trainees how the basic curriculum pre pared them specifically to be more valuable soldiers." "To those familiar with the re cent experience of the ASTP and who have watched the political pressures growing up against it, its days have seemed numbered,' Dr. Dodds commented. "So far as an outside observer could judge, the army had not succeeded in digesting AisiF or in finding a real place for it in the pattern of this war. Indeed, it didn't seem to be trying very hard to do so, and rumors of serious intra- departmental differences regarding progra m were the the value of many. No OCS for Trainees. Princeton's head recounted that not long after the basic course opened, the trainees were, told that contrary to earlier expecta tions, very few if any would pass on to officer training. "Despite their disappointment," he said, "the vast majority appreciated the opportunity to go to college." "Yet what was worse than the! closing of the door to OCS," con tinued President Dodds, "was the fact that the army never suc ceeded in making clear to the trainees how the basic curriculum prepared them specifically to be more valuable soldiers. Moreover, nee their course had been com pleted the army seemed to have no posts available which directly capitalized their training at the colleges." Discussing the import of the ASTP on educational theory. Dr. Dodds concluded his article by stating: "Had the ASTP continued it might have exerted a postwar impact on higher education of wide social significance. The manner of its ending will neutralize this impact to a considerable extent. However, critics who contrast the army training experience with the navy program must not forget that the army was confronted with problems and pressures of quite different magnitudes than the navy."
