Lew Readies
Scarlet Team
For Sooners
i
Oklaliomans
Here Saturday
Pleased with his squad's show
ing in their tight 56-47 loss to the
Kansas Jayhawks Saturday night,
Coach Ad Lewandowski is driving
his Husker cagers thru scrimmage
sessions this week in preparation
for their Saturday night clash with
the Sooners of Oklahoma at the
coliseum.
With Harry Johnston, Douglas
freshman, lost to the armed forces
last week, and Morrie Gaiter fac
ing his V-5 call in the near future,
Lew may be hard put to keep a
squad on the floor Saturday
night, especially if any men are
lost via the foul route. After the
Oklahoma contest, however, there
remains for the Scarlet only a trip
to Kansas State, so Lewandowski
is confident that the Huskers can
finish the season without making
lend-lease arrangements with the
rival schools.
Their loss to the Jayhawks left
the Scarlet still in fifth place, a
jump ahead of the Kansas State
Wildcats. The Huskers have a con
ference record of one win against
seven losses, and must beat the
Wildcats next Tuesday if they
hope to retain undisputed posses
sion of fifth in conference standings.
Irish Upset Great Lakes,
Aggies Tip Sooners, 14-11
Notre Dame's fighting Irish
court squad broke the 21 game
winning streak of Great Lakes
NTS by outscoring the nation's
leading team, 54-51, in the week's
major upset. It was the third loss
for the sailors in 31 games.
In another surprise victory, the
University of Michigan made the
Big Ten title race a wide open af
fair again, by handing Northwest
ern's Wildcats their second confer
ence defeat, 50-45, in Evanston.
Purdue continued on top, and elim
inated another title contender by
topping Wisconsin, 52-50, in an ov
ertime victory. In the final 20 sec
onds of play, Dick McQuade, a
substitute forward, bucketed two
foul shots to give Ohio State a
narrow 54-53 win over Illinois.
Indiana finally snapped its losing
streak with a 48-447 overtime de
cision over Minnesota on the Go
phers' home court. Chicago, as
usual, lost, this time to Illinois
Tech, 46-37.
Sooners Fall to AGS.
Oklahoma, playing a disconcert
ing stalling game, kept possession

of the ball for 30 out of the 40
minutes, and allowed Oklahoma A.
& M. only 14 shots from the field,
but the towering Aggies took ad
vantage of seven foul shots to de
feat the stalling Sooners 14-11 in
the final minutes of the tilt. Ne
braska fell before Phog Allen's
Kansas university squad, 56-47,
and Missouri Tigers tipped Olathe
Naval Air Base, 47-41, in a non-
conference game.
Army's fast breaking West
Point Cadets trimmed Villanova,
34-22, to remain the top eastern
team. In his first eastern game,
since he left Northwestern last
Thursday, All-American Otto Gra
ham totaled 19 points to lead Col
gate to a 53-49 victory over N.Y.U.
Penn downed Navy, 68-56; Penn
State beat Pitt, 35-29; and the
Coast Guard Avademy belted Con
necticut, 59-37.
Rice Tops Southwest.
In the southeast. North Carol
ina State walked over Davidson,
54-31, as South Carolina hit Clem
son, 57-31.
In the Southwest conference,
Rice wound up the season by
clipping Texas 62-34 and Baylor
65-38, thus assuring themselves of
at least a tie for loop laurels. Ar
kansas played no conference
games last week and henche they
dropped to second place in per
centages, but the Razorbacks need
only to beat the lowly Texas Ag
gies at College Station Friday and
Saturday to assure themsedves of
a tie with Rice.

BALLROOM
Conch Ed Weir s Scarlet trackmen surprised even Ed him
self Saturday with their near-upset of the Kansas Jayhawks.
Given little better than an outside chance against either the
strong Jayhawks or Kansas State in the triangular meet, the
Huskers gave K. U. a real scare before dropping. 4: 2-3 to
40 1-3, while Kansas Slate's green suad was far back with
14 points.
Highly pleased with his squad's performance Saturday, Ed
has hopes of a good showing by his boys in the annual Big Six
indoor carnival slated for Kansas City this Saturday. Basing
his prediction on last Saturday's meet and K. U.'s crushing de
feat of Missouri Feb. 12 in a dual meet, Weir feels that his
charges can finish well up in the conference meet.
