'Check This' and Be Right
There With the Big Boys
BY RUTH KORB.
In 1920, college slang took the
rather grotesque forms of "23 Ski
do" and "I love my wife, but, oh
you kid!" and, after consistent
probing into the subject, the col
lege students of 1944 have ad
vanced slang to a much higher
degree of perfection.
"Fella!!" is a term used to de
note anyone and anything within
reach of the speaker's voice, and
does not necessarily mean one of
the male sex. "Hit the road" is
slightly antiquated but still used,
and means to get out, but fast.
"Best you bring your car" is a
shortened way of saying that it
would be preferable if you brought
your car. "Knock it off" is a more
expressive way of telling someone
to forget it. "Here's my five, now
count 'em, now blow 'em, now stow
'em," simply moans to sliake a
hand and then put your own in
your own pocket (confusing, isn't
It?).
"The Kid" is often used by the
speaker to point the finger of at
tention to himself, perhaps to
"mooch," or borrow, a match or a
drink, or something. "Saroote"
or "smeegie" is commonly and
widely used in place , of the more
trite word "cigarct." When a male
is on the hunt for a female, he
often- refers to it as "snipe" hunt
ing, which may have a deeper
meaning than meets the eye.
Slick Chick Is Good.
"Chick" is used, evidently affec
tionately, for a fellow's girl, and
a "slick chick" is even better.
"Batting the breeze'' cc having a
"bull session" is good old "blow
ing" or expounding on various sub
jects. And thei. vf always have
"coming in on tne noon balloon
from Rangoon" which expresses
the fact that someone has just ar
rived from somewhere. "Put the
show on the road" is a vehement
command to get things started.
"Three beers for three dears"
means that three charming people
want three charming beers.
"Smooth" is used to describe some
one that's got it, which is the best
way I can describe it. "Check this"
or "type this" means to observe
closely the subject the speaker is
referring to. "Groceries" is often
used by a fellow to describe a
favorable piece of merchandise, or
a good-looking girl.
Overheard in Sinatra's new mov-

'Stiff," "tight," "loose as a goose,"
'potted like a plant," "inebriated,"
'high," "stinko" and "looped" are
some of the more frequent ones.
As a finale, I present two "Col
lege Joes" having a little talk,
which is simple, clear, and inco
herent to anyone that isn't in, isn't
one of the fella's.
"Hey, fella, what d'yuh know?"
"A lot more than I'm telling."
Have -a glove. Are you in with
Flynn, or out with Stout?"
"To tell the truth, I'm tight with
Stite. Best you have a weed."
"Neat. Have you checked the
new glad rags ? I've been walking
thru the crossroads of the nation,
shoplifting some awfully nice
things."
"Aw, knock it off. It's all in
your mind. You look like the sad
dest sack I have ever seen."
"Well, e'est la guerre." Hey'
Catch that chick tripping down
the sidewalk. Neat, with chrome!"
"And she isn't stacked bad, ei
ther." But enough of this love
talk. Got to get the show on the
road and hit the books. See ya'
liquor. Alchol ya.' "
