THE NEBRASKAN
Husker Team
Takes Road
For Kansas
. Todayi
An eleven-man Husker cage
nquad departs this afternoon on a
southbound trip, which vill find
them clashing with the Jayhawks
of Kansas universiy at Lawrence
tomorrow night and with Okla
homa's Sooners at Norman on
Monday. With Warren Eisenhart
and Rex Mitchell lost to the army
air corps and Morvis Gaiter re
ceiving his V-5 call. Coach Lew
andowski was forced to scrape the
bottom of his manpower barrel to
assemble a squad for the trip,
which brings the Scarlet to grips
with two of the conference's top
quintets.
Named by Lew for the jaunt
were Al Artman, Tom Dworak,
Bob Tangeman, Pat Rooney, Buzz
Hollins, Byrne Swiggert, Russ
Leger, Max Johns, Harry Johnson,
Gordon Baker, and Doug Nelson.
Dworak and Nelson, however, will
return to Lincoln after the Satur
day clash with K, U. Dworak is a
Naval dent student and conse
quently cannot be absent from the
campus for more than 48 hours,
and Nelson must return in time
for Monday classes.
Stress Offense.
The Huskers have been stressing
offensive drill in this week's prac
tice sessions, and Lew has been
driving his boys thru frequent
scrimmages. The squad wound up
preparations for the week end ex
cursion bv hustline thru a hard
work-out and scrimmage last
nieht.
Lew expects both the Jayhawks
and the Sooners to be plenty
tough, with Bruce Drake s Okla
homa squad particularly strong.
Both clubs are heavily spiked with
Naval trainees and hence must be
given a decided edge over the in
experienced Huskers. "II we can
get to hitting the hoop more con
sistently, tho," says Lew, "we can
cause both Kansas and Oklahoma
a lot of trouble."
The traveling squad departs f.t
4:15 this afternoon and returns to
Lincoln at 7:00 Tuesday evening.
Randolph-Macon Womans Col
lege is openiing an evening nutri
tion course open to students ex
cept freshmen, faculty, and towns
people. The course will be com
pleted after ten weeks.

We see that Phog Allen, Kan
sas University's gift to the coach
ing world (yes, Mabel, the coach
ing world is trying to fcive him
back), has issued a challenge to
eastern cage squads to come out
and meet western teams on their
own courts. Fhog asserts that
basketball belongs to the west and
stands ready to prove it to any
eastern team which will venture
out this way. Playing eastern
teams on their own courts, as
western teams usually do, is a de
cided handicap, according to Dr.
Allen, who further claims that
eastern officials allow much too
much rough play. Phog is so con
fident of the west's superiority
that he is willing to let the east
ern teams bring one of their own
officials along, a procedure which
is highly unorthodox, to say the
least (but then Dr. Allen is hardly
an orthodox character).
There seems to be a great deal
of truth in Phog's assertions, de
spite the vitriolic terms in which
he expressed them. Iowa's
Hawkeyes and DePaul Univer
sity, both strictly midwestern
clubs, stand at the top of the
nation's college teams, with
Camp Grant, in Illinois, the
leading service team in the
country. On their recent eastern
trip, the DePaul cagers beat the
very best teams that the east
had to offer, and on their own
courts.
