Sunday, OcToEer M, 1943 . DAILY NEBRASKAN mm BY JOHN C. BENTLEY Playing in rain and mud up to their ears, and before one of the smallest Homecoming game crowds in its history, the Univer sity of Nebraska Cornhuskers smashed and rolled their way to a 7 to victory over the Jay hawks of Kansas university. Play-by-Play Nebraska kicked off to the Kan sans, two tries at the Husker for ward netted the Jayhawks noth ing, and they kicked from their own 36 yard line. Nebraska took over on their own 45, and on the first play, Hollins smashed his way for a first down to the Kan sas 45. On the next play, Ken Swanson took a lateral from Wil kins, and skirting his own left end ran all the way to the Kansas 19 before being run out of bounds. On the next try Hansen was spilled for a six yard loss. Two more tries at the line were un successful, and in trying to "Shoot the Moon," Wilkins flipped a pass intended for Hollins, but the husky back just couldn't get his hands on it, and Kansas took over. HUSKERS SCORE Bergin picked up 7 - yards In two tries at the line for Kansas, and then Swanson raced in from defense to spill Moffet for a 2 yard loss as the Kansan tried to sweep his own right end., Bergin punted from his own 32 and Walt Wilkins, playing deep, took the Kansas punt on his own 35. Wil kins started wide over his right, slipping through two would be tacklers' arms, while the Huskers gathered about him for interfer ence. With beautiful down field blocking, Wilkins ran right through the middle of the entire Jayhawk team to score standing ' up. Jim Hansen made the kick, and the Huskers went out in front 7 to 0. Nebraska kicked off to Kansas, and a whole host of muddy Husk ers smeared Bergin on the Jay hawk 24. Moffet was stopped hard by Bert Gissler for a 1 yard loss. A Kansas pass failed to click, and on the next play, Bergin got off a very bad punt to the Kansas 40 yard line. Wilkins drove for seven, and it looked like the Huskers were off on another goalwartf jaunt. Swanson made it a first down on the Kansas 29, but on Ihe next play, Nebraska received a 5 yard off-side penalty. Hansen and Hollins picked up two apiece, but Swanson was stopped cold on the next play, and Hollins booted out on the Jays' 11. The Jayhawks picked up two first downs before being halted and forced to punt. HUSKERS FAIL CHANCE This time Bergin again got off a bad punt with a slippery ball, and the Huskers took over again on the Kansas 39 yard line. Wil kins started what appeared to be a goalward march by reeling off five over center. On the next play, Big "Buzz" Hollins, who played an outstanding game all day smashed over the Jayhawk tackle, and went clear to the 16 yard line before being dragged down, a run of 19 yards. Hollins then went for three over left tackle. Wilkins went on a sneak over center for 4, but the play was called back and Nebraska given a five yard offside penalty. Nebraska fum bled on an end sweep, and Kansas took over. Moffet ran around end for five yards to the Kansas 30 as the first quaiter ended. JAYHAWKS TALLY With the opening of th? second quarter, the Jayhawks went wild, and flashed some razzle-dazzle football that looked like a Hot Potato game. Bergin took the ball from center, and flipped a short pas in the flat to Carson, just as a Husker hit Carson, he shot a lateral to Moffet, and as Moffet was hit, he flipped a lateral pass to an unidentified Jayhawkerwho was finally hauled down on the Nebraska 48 yard line. Carson drove over tackle for 5. Moffet tossed a short pass to Bergin to the Cornhuskcr 28. Bergin went for three more. Two more plunges into the line put the ball on the 16 yard line for a first and ten. The Husker forward wall tight ened up, and McDermott and Swanson threw an end run for a three yard loss. Hollins batted Eat Your Sunday Chicken Dinner a Jayhawk pass down in the end zone. Stopped on the ground, the Kansans again opened up with their basketball tactics, and made a first down to the Husker 6. For a while, it looked like the Nebras kans wouW hold off the desperate Kansans, but after three short tries at the line, Moffet went over right tackle to score. An attempt ed drop kick was blocked by the entire forward wall of the Scarlet, and the score stood at 7 to 6. SECOND HALF SEE-SAW The second half turned out to be a catch-as-catch-can affair, with both teams having drives halted due to a soggy and slippery pigskin and gridiron. The Huskers started off with a bang, and drove clear down to the Jayhawk ten, where a mud-logged ball was in tercepted, on a bad pass. The Huskers drove down in scoring territory thrice more, only to lose the ball on' fumbles, and likewise, the Kansans, twice knocking on the goal, lost the slimy apple. The end of the game found the Kansans trying desperately to put Free Variety Show Pi Phi Trio Harmonizing Cartoon With Alfred Hitchcock's Thriller "The 39 Steps" Robert Donat as Super Sleuth 8:00 P.
