DAILY NEBRASKAN Thursday, May 6, 1943 4 BY JIDGE MASON. Another possible solution as to the Innocents' reluctance to speak of their dates for the Farewell Party is that they might be dat ing up the Beauty Queens. At least so the latest rumor goes. Bob Saaheld, DU, . has re quested that JeanMiser be in formed that he violently disap proves of a certain pair of shoes she insists on wearing (probably just to irritate him) and would be only too glad to burn them pub licly. Speaking of shoes it seems that rationing has affected Nebraska gills more than was expected as three girls were seen in the Union Grill last night, barefooted. Sympathy. Now that ve"re speaking of the Grill, we have our sympathies to offer to Mary Miles, Tri Delt, who walked into a Cadet-crowded Grill Tuesday evening with an Unknown cadet innocently tagging her heels. After being greeted with taunts and laughter the cadet sneaked off and sat down sheepishly with some of his friends, while Mary retreated, slightly enibarrassed, to another table. Another pinning which has come Into the limelight is that of Kent Kratz, DU, and Mary Tussey, and with every pinning comes news of a steady deal which in this case is between Roma Stoll, Alpha Chi, and Gene Dixon, Sig Ep. The man shortage was empha sized Monday night when a picnic w as developed between the Pi Phis and the Tri Delts. Reports are that it was very successful and jnore such picnics are expected in the near future. Ad: If anyone is going to Omaha at 12:30 (midnight) up until 6:00 a. m. Saturday, please inform Pat Chamberlain, Theta. Getting back to pins again, Mary Jo Kobes, Tri Delt, is now in possession of Lt. Bob Carey's Delta Sig pin. The Firedrake, whose name means fiery dragon, was a member of the Eighth Flotilla. She steamed a million miles in two years. As the author was assigned to the Fire drake as a naval correspondent, his acocunt is based partly on the ship's log and partlv on nersounl experience. The book is illustrated wim oi ficial photographs. The story which it tells is a record of hair breadth escapes from the first to the last. Firedrake, a tough and lucky ship, was in on everything from running battles in convoy duty to the exciting work on the Norwegian coast, from the placid Mediterrnnonn tr n.inl Arctic. Et na bcife . . ... i latest book, "Chile," shows ua why Chile is the country she is today, why our relations with her are crucial, and what we can do to strengthen our ties with this important coun try. Miss Fergusson emphasizes the dramatic importance of this queer piece of land, 1,660 miles from tip to tip and scarcely more than 100 mils vi-r widest point. Chile is one o. me oiaest and most picturesque countries of South America. Her conquest and settlement antedate , Plymouth Rock by nearly a century. Her cul- CLASSIFIED ft lint par day. Contrasts in Chili. She is also a land of contrasts with her coastal deserts, fertile valleys, rain-soaked forests, tow ering Andes, miserable poverty and extreme wealth. Miss Fergus son has contributed to the under standing of the people themselves as she introduces her readers to scores of Chileans, one by one. She has devoted a chapter to the poet Gabrilla Mistral, a notable Latin American writer. "Chile" is a composte picture of the coun try with its farms, mines, rodeos, schools, churches, and views of living- conditions and social life, and the people themselves. Ralph Kauffman, 24 year old University of Iowa law student, received the highest grade in re cent state bar examinations de spite the fact he is blind.
