Weir's Lads
Meet K-State
. . .Saturday
Over underneath east Memorial
stadium activity hbd geared to a
torrid pitch Uit night a track
militant Ed Weir and his Scarlet
student ripped through final
workout prior to their home cin
der inaugural tomorrow afternoon
with Kansas Slate.
Final dispatches by Weir and
Ward Haylctt, Kansas maetitro,
along the pi ess front pointed to
one of the tightest dual meets in
N. U.-Kanss State track history.
Hayett casually kept calling at
tention to Nebraska's strength in
field events though not commit
ting himself as to the final out
come. Weir sighted Al Rues, wing
footed Kan. san, as the man to
watch and declared "Figures .show
the Wildcats, hut look for a thrill
ing relay race to decide the out
come." Rues Best.
Concentrated around the form
of the smooth-striding distance
cog Mr. Rues, the Kansans are
slated to score heavily in the
sprints, hurdles, distances and
broad jump. Rues last spring
pushed Eobby Ginn to an indoor
mile mark of 418.4 and may crack
said record and score again to
morrow with a double win in the
two mile.
Brown Favored.
Chief individual duel of the ex
travaganza will be furnished in
the quartermile where Karusan Up
ham faces rocket-legged Al Brown
in a tide-turning mid-meet event.
Brown's brilliant early year marks
titamp him as favorite in this and
the halfmile grind.
"I think we'll slam that shot
put," said headman Weir "and get
back some valuable points." Big
Vic Schleich, Howie Debus and Ki
Kisenhart are primed to back said
xtatement against weak Wildcat
laient.
Nebraska will get another block
of points in the pole vault with
Debus, and in the high jump with
Abbott and Petring, but other
things are indefinite.
"I've got a relay team that with
coordination can give those Wild
cats a run for their money," con
cluded Weir. His tentative lineup
had Max Peterson, Hazard, Bowles
and Brown running in that order.

NORMAN, Okla., Feb. 19. Al
though Oklahoma's youthful,
meager track and field squad may
not win any meets this spring it
likes to run.
Composed chiefly of freshmen
and sophomores, the new Sooner
thinclads tried to enter every
event on the calendar in Satur
day's indoor interclass meet.
Champion iron man was Lynn
"Hobo'' Gilstrap, Ardmore fresh
man, who placed In seven events.
High point scorer of the 1942
Class A Oklahoma Interscholastic
meet, Gilstrap won seconds in the
60 yards high hurdles and high
jump; thirds in the 60 yards dash;
the 60 yards low hurdles and the
440; fourth in the broad jump and
then topped off his afternoon's ex
ercises by running a snappy relay
Jog.
Andy Cary, Duncan freshman
and Oklahoma Interscholastic 440
and 880 champ last year, tri
umphed in the 440 and 880 and
then anchored the freshmen relay
team, in spite of the fact that he
was on his feet six hours preced
ing competition working in a gro
cery store.
Charles Heard, Cleveland soph
omore, looked fresh after wading
through half a dozen events. He
won the 60-yard high hurdles, was
second in the lows, placed in the
high jump, broad jump and pole
vault, and ran a crisp relay leg
for the victorious sophomores.

for enlisted men returning to col

"We have made no plans to use
these boys," said George F. Veen

"We knew they would be too busy
with their own concentrated pro

Tigers Here
Saturday
For Battle
. . . For Third
BY MORRIS ANDERSON.
(Sports Editor.)
Missouri's rapidly-rising maple
men will come to town Saturday
night intent on licking Nebraska
i because: 1. Victory over Nebras
ka is essential to the Mizzou "third
place or else" drive: 2. That early
season defeat at Husker hands
still rankles with Tiger vengance.
When the Tigers arrive at the
coliseum Saturday night they will
find Mentor Ad Lewandowski'
Cornhuskers eqaully in earnest
concerning the evening's doings
because: 1. Like the Invaders,
third place in the league is now
a seasonal goal. 2. Victory over
Misosuri in any sport is sweet to
Husker fans.
Huskers Improve.
Lewandowski and his flippers
went into a huddle yesterday aft
ernoon to devise some method of
stopping big Thornton Jenkins,
high-scoring Mizzou soph center.
Jenkins ruined Oklahoma last
week with 17 points and a conse
quent Mizzou win.
If a bookie had taken bets on
Nebraska chances against Mizzou
at outset of the first half Satur
day night, he couldn't have found
a taker. Husker passing, defensive
play and ball-handling was de
cidedly "high school." Then came
that grand finish when the chips
were down to make spectators for

fracas.
"We intend to take up just
where we left off against the Wild
cats," said Lewandowski yester
day, "Our boys seem to be click

Lewandowski issued a "prob

virtually the identical flippers who
opened against K-State. Johnny
Thompson will open at one forward
berth with Ken Eluon and John
Fitzgibbon waging a scrap for the
other front-line position. Either
John Eottorff or Max Young will
