It took Nebraska's inspired Huskers ten minutes to start click ing, but once the bad basketball was out of their system there was no stopping the Lewandowskimen as they ran up a 52-43 win over the previously undefeated Univer sity of Iowa Hawkeyes last night It was Nebraska's first win of the eeaon. With the Huskers trailing 10-4 at the end of ten minutes of the first half, Bob Heinzelman took matters into his own hands and proceeded to tally 16 points be fore the half time gong sounded. Seven markers during the last pe riod gave "Heinz" a total of 23 for the evening. Heinzelman started his hot streak by sinking three quick bas kets to bring the locals within one point of the Iowans. Chapman, Iowa's high point man, then ex tended the visitors' lead to 15-12 with two good shots. Heinzelman again found the hoop for two bas kets to whittle the Hawks' lead to 15-14. With the Iowans still lead ings 20-17, Heinzelman kept his torrid streak intact by dumping in three more shots to give Ne braska their first lead of the ball game 21-20. A tip-in by Ben Trickey gave Iowa the lead at half time 22-21. Huskers Pull Away. . Nebraska opened the second half with Max Young, Ken Elson, and Heinzelman scoring to give the Huskers a 27-22 lead which tHey never relinquished. From then on the Big Ten team couldn't keep up with the inspired Huskers. Second half play found Kenny Elson, Max Young, and John Bott orf too much for the surprised Hawks. UCLA Bowl Bid RecallsWetBet Made by Prof It's not too difficult for Ne braska fans to understand the enthusiasm shown by students at UCLA since the Bruin victory over Southern Cal a week ago. The Uclans, so near and yet so far from the Rose Bowl for so many years, are playing there for the first time as a result of their win over the Trojans. One thing that didn't come out of the announcement here two years ago is related in a press dispatch from Los Angeles. It seems one of the profs out there made the vow 11 years ago that if UCLA ever beat Southern Cal in football he would appear in class drunk and lecture on Latin. The prof a Sunday school teacher spent his Latin lecture period drinking from a bottle with a "gin" label on it. Students were a little skeptical about the label, the contents, and the prof. six markers during the final half while Young was good for eight. Chapman Leads Hawks. Iowa's two sharp-shooting for wards, Tom Chapman and Ben Trickey, was all that "Pops" Har rison could show for the Iowa of fense. Chapman led the Hawks' scoring with 18 points while Trickey had nine to his credit. Both left the game via the. foul route late in the game. Between halves Al Lagman and Al White participated in a ping pong exhibition. With the Husker basketball schedule already cut by two cancellations and arrangements under way to call off the Indi ana tilt, orierinallv set for December 30, winter intercollegiate athetic activity may take a decided dip because of restricted travel. Only two teams Nebraska and Iowa State nave indicated a desire to participate in Big Six swimming, while Husker rep resentatives at the Kansas City meeting cast tne sole vote lor wrestling. From all appearances, intramural athletics in most midwestern schools will be getting more and more emphasis as time goes on. One bright pot in the picture came with the announce ment last night that the Illinois Tech relays would be held in Chicago next March. The Tech relays annually draw schools from every section of the country with nearly 70 schools rep resented last year. Although Nebraska doesn't attend, it might mean a good track year. m The ALL season, along with the Yule season, finds press association selections to date made for: .All-America football teams (many, many of them); all-pro football teams; all- America swimming team; al-offensive grid team; all-defensive team; all-time baseball team; outstanding gndder of the year; outstanding male athlete of the year; outstanding female ath lete of the year (one witty scribe cast his vote for Vanity, a two-year-old filly); outstanding coach of the year; man doing the most for athletics during the year, and finally outstanding comeback of the year. Interesting to note that in the last-mentioned "all, Kansas State's football team received three votes, obviously for their 19-0 upset of Nebraska. Best bet for just one more "all" would be an Outstanding-I-Gave-The Wrong-Way bookie of the year. A new season for sports writers and headline writers, and with it, a chance for new (with apologies to Norris Anderson) slang in the sports columns. If Coach Doaks' basketball team wins a game, they have several ways of winning. For instance: Coach Doaks' stalwarts might have: Taken, annexed a decision, come out on top, romped to victory, breezed by their opponents, outpointed, proved too much for, thumped, walloped, thrashed, shellacked, backmarked, buried, coasted in to a win, delivered, waved the colors, drubbed, free-wheeled, flown their kites, knocked one cat-west and crooked, taken the measure of, nosed out, nicked, outscored, skinned, repelled, powerhoused by, rollicked over, upset, topped, trimmed, slammed, snowed under, smothered, dumped, edged out, rumbled (by), rocketed (by), coasted (by), or simply chalked up a defeat. All of this of course in the same tilt, fracas, battle, tussle, casaba game, hoop clash, scrap, session, mix, joust, fight, fray, duel, contest, encounter, go, engagement. y Reason vf Ckwtutga 6-2326 Buy war bonds , 1 IXand stamps ty j Fairmont Creamery 2823 No. 48 Twenty-three Win Frosh Grid Awards Only 23 University of Nebraska freshman football numeral awards were announced Friday by the athletic board.
