D. Whitney, head of the university's depart ment of zoology. Planning to sail home on an English vessel on which he had made reservations, Dr. Whitney, at the last moment, was forced to make new plans be cause the ship was conscripted for British military use. Traveling by train across Eng land, two hours behind schedule, and then by boat, Whitney and others arrived in neutral Amster dam, to find that fortunately the Dutch liner was still waiting for them. By taking advantage of this opportunity to leave, Dr. Whitney managed to leave Lurope only a few clays before the outbreak of hostilities. Traveled In far north. According to Dr. Whitney, the boat traveled a path across the far-north Atlantic to save time. There was no black-out at night, lights burned brightly, no zig-zag course was followed. Most neutral ships have accepted this as the safest way to travel. The word "Holland" was painted in large let ters across the top of the vessel so that it could be easily identified from the air. Kut sinplp submarine hattle- i ship or gun boat was sighted on the trip. Only one ship, an oil fish. I - i - - dm ml ifM bi- ju'pfp mm n-m5i7r humdmrn fmr mm : m-m b rm 1f?M & M Lincoln Journal. With us they're tops. Their luxurious COFFEE LOUNGE and delicious food go hand in hand to give one that delightful feeling of utmost security. And that's what we need iust now. It's the CAPITAL HOTEL every time for us. ; I f (Continued from Page 1.) choosing affiliations-their liking for individual members of each sorority. Among the suggestions for cor recting the situation, in addition to going back to summer rushing was deferred rushing with only second semester freshmen, or those of higher standing, allowed to pledge. Several of the coeds-to-be thought that certain sororities at tracted a definite type of girl, but they differed as to classifications. One rushee mentioned one house as having mostly short girls, an other for sophisticated women, another for jolly 'gals," always laughing. Other sorority "types were: Social, scholastic and in- between. On the other hand, one girl observed that she found many "types" in each house. Either way, however, Nebraska's Greek women seem to be somehow "typed" In the minds of many of their rtishees. And here's a tip for over zeal ous sororities who are inclined to put on a bit of pressure in rush sessions all of the girls asked said they definitely disliked high pres sure methods In fact, two de clared that such tactica antagon ized them. They prefer a sincere, honest approach which does not "run down" rival houses and Life, love and 12:30 nights on the Nebraska campus make an ab sorbing field to explore for any dean of women, thinks enthusias tic Helen Hosp, the new head of women. Here, in paraphrase, are some of her feelings. LIKE: I love it! I have never come to a place where so much enthusiasm and understanding was shown me immediately. I'm anxious to get acquainted with every phase of the life of Nebraska's women and hear their views,. I want to learn about the problems and situations in need of improvement from the students themselves. I have no specific plans for put ting into effect this year. The de;in of women shouldn't make ner plans go through just because th"y are her plans, and I don t intena to make any until I have become acquainted with the needs of the women on this campus. I am fairly confident that the students will take the initiative themselves :n expressing their desires, for all the student leaders I have met tlru far seem to be outstanding in abil ity and enthusiasm. And I LIKE your XMeurasna weather. People ask me if 1 don't just hate those hot winds and I tell them that is not the wind; it's the breeze. And I've moved into Ellen Smith hall to stay because I want to be right down in the thick of things. LOVE: I'm not interested in putting re strictions on the college girl's ac tivities. I am interested in the girl developing a feeling of responsibil ity for good standards and good taste in all her associations -with men especially. 12:30 NIGHTS: It's a business matter. I don't believe in violations simply be cause I believe in doing things in a businesslike way and I think it's unbusinesslike not to stand by what you have agreed to put into effect. It's not a question of whether the time is good or bad; whatever the girls themselves agree upo(j as reasonable is ail right so long as they are faithful to their decision. SUMMARY: "Here comes our Nebraska 'breeze.' You hold down the desk." which leaves the rushee free to make her own comparisons. As for other factors which in fluence a bewildered freshman in selecting a sorority, one girl said national ranking is very impor tant to her as she is not sure of remaining at the same school. To some, the comparative beauty and comfort of the various houses means nothing; to one, that is a major consideration. Girls already aiming for activi ties naturally are influenced by Mortar Boards and other promi nent activity women, but, say these embroyo publications work ers and A. W. S. presidents, each house boasta its own quota of activity sharks which gives none the advantage here. 1 LEAIEN TO DANCE GUARANTEE vou TO DANr,!
