Wildcats Offer Buskers' Last Competition Before
Big Six Championship; Dual Meet to
Precede State Track Carnival.
Kansas State's Wildcat track team will offer Coach Henry
p. 4Ta" Schulte and his Scarlet and Cream trackmen their
final competition before the approaching Big Six conference
championships. The K-Aggies and the J tuskers meet in Memo
rial Stadium at 1 o'clock Friday, immediately followed by the
preliminaries of the state nign
school championships.
Right now, "Pa" Schulte's pu
nils are the "tops" in Big Six cir
cles by virtue of victories over
Kansas and Oklahoma. With the
Sooners favored to win, the
Schultemen went south to Nor
man to decisively out-perform the
Oklahoma croup 71 1-Z to 59 l-Z
Previoubly, the Hunkers took the
wind out of the Jayhawk sails
in a dual meet here. The score was
87 2-3 for the Cornhuskers and
37 1-3 for the Jayhawkers.
Wildcats Take K. U.
The Wildcats won over the Jay
hawkers last week 77 to 54 and
Missouri conquered Washington
university 70 to 60 1-2. The dope
bucket spills forth in saying that
the Big Six meet will be a dual
contest between Nebraska and
Kansas State, with the Schulte
men favored to cop the champion
ship. Missouri looks like the tradi
tional dark horse that should come
thru for a few high places.
Nebraska's sister members of
the Big Six conference have taken
up the old time chant of "Stop
Nebraska!" as the date of the
meet draws near. Despite the tra
ditional pessimism of Coach "Pa"
Schulte, the Huskera have the
market on the dashes, hurdles, and
shot cornered, to total nearly 25
points 'ere the meet begins. There
are sufficient Schultemen who can
win enough points to bring the
championship trophy to Husker
land. High Jump Weak Spot.
Standley Haight looks good for
two firsts in the low and high
hurdles. Harold Jacobsen is ready
to win the century and furlong
dashes. Sam Francis dominates
the field in shotputting and is a
leading contender in the discus,
along with Fred Shirey. Les Pan
konin is the Husker quarter miler
and Bob Morris and Bob West are
two of the finest half milers in Big
Six camps. Fred Matteson, Wilson
Andrews, and Chet Beaver com

jump race that Kansas, Missouri,
and Oklahoma are staging. The
high jump has been the sole weak
spot in the Husker's field lineup,
but sufficient strength in the
other events balance the inevit
able loss.
Haight' Time Good.
Monday "Jake" Jacobsen ran
the 100 in 9.7 seconds twice to set
him up as the leading cinderpath
ace in the conference. "Jake" has
done the 220 in 22 seconds flat for
another fast time. Les Pankonln
has done the 440 in 49 seconds,
one-tenth second behind the fast
est time of Barrett of Oklahoma.
Barrett holds top place in the fc80
with a time of 1:58.7. Fred Matte
son's 10:01.8 is the best two mile
mark made this season.
Standley Haight's hurdling has
been excellent thruout the season.
His best high hurdle time is 14.6
seconds and 23.9 seconds for the
low hurdles. Sherman Cosgrove
will have stiff competition vault
ing against Lyons of Iowa State,
Noble of Kansas, and Best of
Oklahoma. Corn of Oklahoma and
Pitts of Kansas will be Lloyd
Cardwell's opposition in the broad
jump. Sam Francis leads the dis
cus hurlers at 140 feet 9 inches
and the shot putters at 49 feet 11
inches.

"Southern cracker" and "poor
wnite trash," two terms common'
ly misunderstood by people over
the country are given their proper
interpretation by Dr J. H. Rein
hardt and Dr. William Van Royen.
Dr. Reinhardt, a native of the
south, says there is a difference,
They treat the subject in a review
of a book dealing with the life
and the times of the south. The
review appeared in the last issue
of Social Forces.
"The original southern cracker,"
they say, "lived in the upland
sandy regions, raised a bale or two
of cotton, had a small flock of
sheep, a few cows, some hogs and
maybe two or three slaves. He was
a hunter during a considerable
part of the year, made his own
liquor, or knew where to get it,
and cracked a whip behind his
own team of mules. He rarely bad
more than five dollars in cash,
lived in a closed economy, and
boasted of his imaginary inde
pendence. "Poor white trash, accurately
speaking, in the old south, referred
to- degenerate whites living main
ly within the plantation areas.
They were stranded creatures
often held in contempt by slaves
and planters alike and forced by
slave labor competition into what
was, on the average, probably the
most wretched existence ever ex
perienced by any class on this con
tinent." "Lack of crop rotation, poor cul
tivation methods, mixing of cot
ton seeds at the gin; illiteracy, mo
bility, poverty and disease (south
ern tenants are among the largest
users of patent medicines) com
bine to keep the cotton cropper in
a vicious circle of economy," they
write.

Annual Big Six Telegraphic
Tourney Under Way; To

Wayne Yarc.ho, promising fresh
man middle distance runner,
started off the annual freshman
telegraphic track and field com
petition Tuesday by completing the
880 yard distance in 1:58.3. Con
sidering that he trotted thru the
first lap in sixty seconds and put
on an amazing burst of speed in
the finish, the time was one of the
best ever made by a freshman
runner.
Big Six Runs.
Each university In the Big Six
conference runs their best fresh'
men in their special events. Re
suits are wired to the other schools
and the times and distances are
compared. These reports are
judged by the Big Six coaches who
rate their own freshmen according
to best time or distance. The com
parison of results determine which
freshmen are awarded numeral
sweaters from their respective col
leges.
Telegraphic competition will be
staged three days of this week and
three days next week. After the
meet is completed, the entire group
of frosh numeral sweater men will
be announced.
Wins Sweater.
Wayne Yarcho's outstanding
performance Tuesday merited for
him a numeral sweater. The re
quired time for the 880 is 2:02.0
and Yarcho completed the distance
in 1:58.3. Bob Simmons has won
his numeral sweater by doing the
440 in :50.6, four-tenths second be
