Believe Magazine Fails
Justify Subsidy From
College.
DEPRESSION JDEALT BLOW
One Issue May Appear in
Spring to Keep Student
Interest Alive.
The Cornhusker Countryman,
student magazine on the Ag Col
li ge campus, was "temporarily
discontinued " at a meeting Monday
of the college publications board.
The magazine had been published
regularly by students in the college
for more than six years
College officials expressed the
opinion in the meeting Monday
that the magazine was of consid
erable value to the students on the
campus and to prospective students
still in high schools, hut tnat the
value was not enough to justify
the cost to the college, according
to Prof. R. P. Crawford, chairman
of the board.
One thousand copies of eac h is
sue of the magazine were sent to
various high schools in the state.
The college paid for these as an
advertising measure. It was be
lieved by the hoard that the maga
zine could not continue without
that subsidy, and that the heavy
curtailment of , ollege funds made
the subsidy an unwise measure.
The real death-blow, according
to Crawford, came to the Country
man last year when the national
advertising was cut off. In better
years several hundred dollars
worth of national advertising had
come to the 'magazine each yeai.
Crawford said that last year's ex
perierce showed that the. magazine
c ould not operate on local adver
tising alone, and that it would be
the part of wi-dom to discontinue
until national advertising could be
secured again.
The college board said that in
terest, in a st'ident magazine
should he kept alive if possible, and
they sugge.-ted one feature issue in
the" spring, probably at Farme rs'
Fair time, 10 keep the Countryman
tradition alive. "Ve may decide to
publish one issue late this year,
Crawford said, "hut until condi
tions improve there will bL no reg
ular Count rvman."
