Under present conditions many student activities on the campus are largely dependent upon the fluc tuating fortunes of the athletic trt-asnre chest. If the athletic schedule is good, the weather good, the gate receipts large, student activities may ex pect to have their budgets ap proved in full. After the coaches are paid, the equipment purchased for the team, the minor sport pro- J grams taken care of in good shape. the inteiest and principal on tin- j coliseum bonds met, there may be i some leavings for the various stu- ! dent activities. Those organizations which have j concessions to make their own ; money are usually able to get j along well enough if they are lucky, but other student groups cannot tell whether they will be ;l?le to perform their customary functions or any new functions un til they find out what condition! the athletic department is in. A student activity tax would j remedy this situation. Organia-1 tions who function in the inten-sts i of all students would be able to I know definitely what funds would ! be placed at their disposal. And j the athletic department itself i would benefit without at the same! time having a prior claim to the student activity funds. It would know definitely how much money it would receive from students and could forego the .uncertainty as to gate receipts so far as the student body is concerned. Furthermore it would not be obliged to expend money and energy in boosting the sale of student athletic tickets. We have already pointed out the fact that the student body would be able to receive the benefits of these various activities at lower cost than at present. The fact that every student would pay a certain fee would mean that this compo site fee would be considerably less than the cost of every benefit pur i hased separately. The advantage or independent support which stu ui nt organizations would enjoy un der the activity tax system is l erely another advantage besides the chief fact that the tax would live every student more for less iiionev. Perhaps the most obnoxious form of spring fever is the annual revival of student politics. The custom is probably related to the spring sheep shearing.
