Collins of the observatory the Leonid me teor display which occurs only once in thirty-three years, is ex pected to occur on or about next Monday, Nov. 14. In 1833 this dem onstration was seen first in a bril liant scene, in 1866.it was again seen, although in less brilliance, and it occurred again in 1899. These flying particles, often wrongly called shooting stars, ra diate from the sickle of the con stellation Leo, thus the name. The Leonid display Ls especially bright because the meteors enter the at mosphere of the earth at the rate of 40 or 50 miles a second. They become luminous when about 100 miles from the surface of the earth, and burn themselves out after proceeding about sixty miles further to the forty mile line. To Designate Number. Mr. Collins sent out maps of the sky as it is seen as one faces east so that anyone interested might record the path of the particles, the time of appearance, place from which they started, and place of disappearance. He also requested that these persons designate on the maps which they send in the number of meteors seen during each fifteen minute interval. These figures are being compiled in order that the figures as to the distance from earth, the point of radiation, and other such computa tions might be checked.
