Students Total 2,713; New
Plans Tried During
Short Term.
With 2,713 students. In attend
ance, the 1931 summer session
eclipsed the one of 1930 r. which
time 2,577 studied. Seven hundred
and seventeen of the students reg
istered this last summer were tak
ing graduate work. This was also
an increase of about 23 percent
over tbs year before.
Twelve hundred sixty-nine com
pleted their work In the six
weeks' course while the remain
der of those enrolled stayed for
the nine weeks' session. A new
Idea in attending summer school
was Inaugurated by the extension
division. Students could go to
summer school six weeks and
make nine hours credit by com
pleting one nour In each course by
extension. Many took advantage
of this opportunity.
Sessions of various lengths were
offered regular students and also
instructors from the schools of the
suite. Three special two week
courses Included vitalized agricul
ture for rural schools, rural school
administration and supervision,
and parent teachers association.
.A coaching school In connection
with the 1931 Amateur Athletic
games held m Lincoln was spon
sored by the athletic department.
Besides the local coaches. D. X.
Bible. H. F. Schulte, Charlie
Black, Ed Weir and Bill Day,
"Doc" lcLen also gave instruc
tion in taking care of injuries of
the athletes. Coaches from various
colleges and universities, who were
in Lincoln with men competing in
the games, also taught classes.
A student executive committee
wej appointed to have charge of
the social and recreational affairs
of the students. This was the first
time anything had been attempted
and the success of the venture in
dicates that in the future a com
mittee will be appointed from the
student body for each summer ses
sion. 'New member for Phi Delta
Kappa, honorary and professional
educational fraternity, were
chosen and Initiated. They in
cluded fifteen graduate students In
education who are prominent in
the educational field of Nebraska
and surrounding states. Election
is" decided upon by scholastic rec
ord as well as service in this field.
A new scholarship fund for stu
dents in dramatic arts was beun
last summer. A special showing of
the University Players in "Ladies
r.f the Jury." sponsored by the
summer student froup, brought in
more than two hundred dollars,
which is to be given to worthy
students in dramatics. Each schol
arship will be worth J100.
STOCK JUDGING TRYOUT
Junior kg College Livestock
Team Will Begin Work
This Week.
Prof. M. A. Alexander of the
animal husbandry department at
the agricultural college announced
late Thursday that the junior live
stock team would start working
out Saturday of this week. Alex
ander la to have charge of the
team until Prof. R. R- Thalman
returns from Chicago.
The team will atart practicing
immediately for judging compe
tition at Denver this winter. Last
year the Nebraska team won first
place in the western show at Den
ver. Five men will compose the
team.
If Nebraska wins at Denver
again- this year in the collegiate
livestock judging contest, they will
be allowed to keep a large trophy
which was temporarily won last
year. In order to secure permanent
possession of the trophy a team
must win it three times. Nebraska
and Kansas have both won the
contest twice in former years.

said that there was a greater
