AM ATHLETES SHOW
WARES STADIUM TRACK
Halstead Wins Mile With
Bracey Class of Sprint
Stars.
With an even dozen out-state
athletes in suit, Memorial stadium
Saturday afternoon had a decided
A. A. U. flavor, series of exhibi
tion runs attracting several nun
dred fans and coaches from all
sections of the state.
Claude Uracey, the Texas flyer,
once with Rice Institute but now
wearing the colors of the Millrose
Athletic club was the class of the
splinters finishing far ahead of
the field that included Gipper

Toe" Cinder Man
Big Bernie Masterson, next year
a sophomore member of the Uni
versity of Nebraska's football
squad, has turned into a big "heel
and toe" man.
It all began four years ago when
Masterson, then a Lincoln high
school athlete, started mimicking
heel and toe walkers here for the
national A. A. U. meet just to have
some fun and give his friends a
laugh.
Since that time, however, Big
Bernie has been taking his heel
and toe work seriously and now
under the management of Cliff
Cunningham, Lincoln Y. M. C. A.
and George Douglas Lloyd, peni
tentiary inmate and former Eng
lish di3tance walker, he is training
extensively for the A. A. U. meet
Friday.
University officials are inclined
to scoff slightly at the idea but
Bernie is insistent, Cliff is enthus
iastic and Lloyd thinks Bernie has
the right build. Last year only two
men entered the junior A. A. U.
three mile heel and toe walk at
Pittsburgh and if the field is as
small this year, Cunningham be
lieves his protege ought at least
to win a place.

Locke and Dave Froelich.
Cliff Halstead, University of
Southern California and Ralph
Hill, Oregon, took the spotlight in
the mile with Jim Storey, Husker
freshman, running third. Halstead
and Hill were both timed under
4:20, E. T. Turner, University of
Michigan, an 880 yard performer,
running in the same race, stopped
after sprinting in at the half mile
mark.
Johnny Morris, national junior
A. A. U. high hurdles champion,
Buck Grant, University of Utah,
Linus Carroll and Bill Fleming,
Nebraska, paced thru several
hurdle flights before calling it a
day.
George Corbett, Brigham Young
university, got better than one
hundred and fifty feet in the dis
cus and was getting close to forty-
three feet in the shot. Hugh Rhea's
best effort in the iron ball event
was a shade better than forty-
seven feet.
