were supposed to. On defense, the I
varsity outfit held the seconds to!
very few baskets. I
Guards Are Stron.
Lewan.lowskl and Witte are two i
very potent guards. anJ w-hen the
close formation on defen.e is used, j
the Nebraska team looks nearly I
imrreirnahle. Grace. Fisher, and .
McClay were working the ball
through for counters nearly at
will. This team is beginning to ac
quire the polish that will r plenty
valuable whfn the schedule oi
games starts.
When Herb Gish was In Kansas
City at the Big Six meeting, he
managed to have the date for the
Oklahoma game changed from
Jan. 25 to Jan. 20. He was unable
to schedule the Oklahoma Aggtft
team for a game, but there is a
possibility that Iowa University
will play on the Nebraska floor
this year. Arrangements have not
been completed, but there will
probably be a game arranged.
Kansas I Powerful.
Reports coming up from Kansas
are to the effect that they are go
ing to have the best team they
nave had since their leadership of
the Missouri valley was taken
away by Oklahoma. Coach Allen
will do all of the coaching this
year, and he has one real sched
ule to prepare for.
Coach Hugh McDermott of
Oklahoma, whose teams have not
lost a conference game for the
past two years. Is In again this
year with a team that hopes to
carry on the all winning habit.
Tom Churchill, the grinning Okla
homa captain, has never played In
a losing game of basketball since
be started playing with the Sooner
first team two years ago.
Six Lettermeii with K-Aggles.
With six lettermen and a wealth
of promising sophomore for the
K-Aggie team, the stock of tbe
Kansas Agricultural school Is
soaring rapidly. Most promising of
the sophomore material Is Cronk
lte, who playe don the football
team. This youth Is Just, six feet
and five Inches In altitude, and
weighs about two hundred pounds.
Missouri has the makings of one
of the best teams In the confer
ence, na all of their regulars are
back in school this year. All six
of the lettermen from the Tiger
school are more than six feet tall,
and heighth means plenty when It
comes to basketball. Last year
Missouri finished next to o'kla
homa In the struggle for basket
ball honors, and they sre serving
warning that they expect to be a
great deal better this year.
Nebraska will have one well
oiled machine ready to play
against any other team In the
conference, and It looka like a real
seas'm for everybody. Basketball
In the Big Six "looka to b on a
higher plane this season than
was last year.
Halves Will Be Intertpersed.
Halves of games are to be Inter
spersed this yesr 'n the tourna
ment. Rudolph Vogeler, director of
Intramural athletics, pointed out
todav.
League five and league six

Coach Oakes Has Abundance

Squad From.
MENTORS PICK VARSITY
Freshmen basketball coach.
Bunny Oakes has a squad of about
seventy men out for practice now,
and it is beginning to look like a
banner year for the yearlings.
Fundamentals are being worked on
now, and the Nebraska system Is
being taught to the first year men.
Oakes has been selecting his ma
terial for the freshmen varsity and
he expects to have his squad com
plete In a couple of days. Yester
day the men went through a little
scrimmage, and the likely looking
candidates were selected to play on
the first team.
Enrollment Approaches 100.
Coaches Bokenkroger and John
son will assist Oakes in the hand
ling of the freshmen basketballers.
The enrollment is expected fo be
very near a hundred before the
end of the week. The men that are
not selected to play on the varsity
squad will be divided up Into teams
and play games among themselves.
Charley Black Intends to use the
freshmen basketball team In the
capacity of warm-ups for the
varsity. That Is net usually the
i case, as tbe yearlings can always
give a pretty good account of
themselves wherever they are.
When the second varsity team Is
not furnishing the opposition for
the varsity, the freshmen will be
the objects for the regulars w-rath
and ability.

With a number of open date on .
the Iowa schedule, and two open
date on the Husker schedule, the t
time look ripe for Neb.-aska of- '
ficlals tc negotiate with the Hnv-
ee officials for a resumption of
football relationship. One of tnc I

none other than the University of
day when the gridiron warrior
of the middle wet wore their
beard in collegiate fashion, the
University of Nebraska and th
University of Iowa game w.is one
of the biggest in the middia west.
These two school tarted football
relationship almost as soon
fotoball started in the two state
and only up until ten years ago
did the two achool discontinue
plsying. With Iowa ao located a
the next door neighbor to Ne
braska and the industrial statu
of the two states generally formed
in agricultural line, a resumption
of football relationship with lo.i
would be a most desirable thing
for Nebraska. An overnight jaunt
brings one to Iowa City, the home
of the Iowa Hawkeyes which
would be most favorable to draw
ing not only a large football crowd
to the games either at Lincoln or
at Iowa City but would continue
the athletic rivalry which has ex
isted for such a long period of
time.

With Texas Aggies definately
on the Cornhusker schedule for
next year, Nebraska's slate begins
to take on complete form for the

Aggie game will replace the
Southern Methodist game of this
year and wll be Coach Bible's old
school .It may seem funny to D. X.
to pitt his Cornhuskers against the
Texas school which he coached for
the past eleven years, turning out
some of the greatest elevens In the
suthwest. The Texas A. A M.
game Is booked for October and Is
the opening game of the season.
