CONVOCATION SYSTEM
FROM DAILY CHAPEL
('nttnaad from ra-r I.
e i hat provoked much mirth
nmnng fhe undergraduaiea, even
back in the staid nineties.
Chancellor Led Meetings
F.atller In the history of the ("Di
versity, the chapel exercises were
conducted by the chancellor, al
though Doctor Bessey took charge
on rare occasions. These services,
lasting about twenty minutes, were
a'rlitly religions except for the
the making of announcements. Ap
proximately three, hundred slu
rt'-nts attended. Although atten
dance was not compulsory, every
one was expected to be present.
Religious meetings were held each
Monday. Wednesday, and Friday,
while Tuesday was held open for
general suh.iects.
The professors all had to sit on
the platform In a sober line during
these services. Some of them were
quick to appreciate a Joke told by
t lie) spt-aker. Othera were not so
quick, and would burst out in a
hearty chuckle only after every- !
one else had slopped laughing. The 1
student audience spent Its time de
fermlriljig tbe mental time ratios ,
of the various Instructors. After a
little practice, they could forcasi '
accurately which professor would !
be tbe last to see the Joke. I
