THE DAILY NEBRASKAN. FIVE. GRIDSTERS HALT AFTER WEEK OF Team Will Work Out Behind Barred Gates Prior to Frosh Tussle SCRIMMAGE ON SLATE Yfttte and Claire Sloan Are On Heaving End in Pass Attack Conch Bear? ended his first week of football practice last night with a fast workout on passing, punting and signal drills. The Cornhusker coach has two more weeks to pre pare hi Scarlet and Cream charges for '.he Iowa State battle at Ames on October 6. Practice will be closed to all foot ball fans this week and the first op portunity to see the "big red" team in actlon will be Saturday after noon when the 1928 edition of the Coinhu.sker footballers meet the frehmen varsity eleven. Coach HlHck has been recalled from the football rules conference atcotts bluff in order to get his yearling gridiron aspirants in shape for the initial tangle with the Huskers. Saturday evening the Huskers we,e sent through the fiual funda mental session. Scrimmage will be the main thing on the program this veek. raising and wing formations will take up a greater portion of the coaching staffs time. At the hurling post, Coach Bearg has been using "Dutch" Witte and Clair -;ioan. This pair of backs seem to have the edge on-the passing game. itte has a bullet-like pass and is very accurate in his throw. In the punting role is Clair Sloan .1- ........ K 1. trirtlo. HARD PRACTICE rf again, iue w""1"" ........ f "I t ii eat man. Sloan has a punt that r J should put fer into the hearts of ,he Iowa State fans. Ana wun Blue Howell and "Red" Russell, the two "MO-pound Cornhusker backs to t'ound and drive the line Nebraska's chances to close a successful sea son look exceptionally'bright. There still remains a great deal of competition for the wing posi tions. With the loss of Lee and Lawson from last year's team, the end positions have been thrown open for bids. Cliff Ashburn, 190 pound end from last year is making a great bid for one side of the line whil Bushee and Slmlc are afford ing him competition. On the other wing position are Cliff Morgan, 18i-pound end from Greeley, Colo rado. Those giving Morgan a battle for the left end are Prucha, Fisher, l.ewandowskl, Helmsdorfer and several others. "Big" Richards, tackle from last year's eleven, is finding plenty of pood tackles on the squad to give him a fight for the tackle position. Pome of the outstanding men are Red Ray and Eno. On the other side of the line are Broadstone. Lucas and Munn, all of which? are about equal. At the guard posts are Captain Elmer Holm, and Dan McMullen, both from last year's eleven. Galla av. Justice and several others are bidding for guard positions. Ted James, Zuver, Philips, are making their bids for the pivot position of the line. With this array of line material. Coach Bunny" Oakes is drilling for the opening game ae Ames in two weeks. Brickfield material is abundant in the Cornhusker camp. The tenta tive backfield on the practice field consists of Russell at quarter, Howell at full, Sloan and Farley at halves. The second combination consists of Peaker at quarter, Frahm at full, Witte and McBride at halves. PLEDGE LISTS OF SORORI TIES SHOW INCREASE Continued from 1'age 1. Marlon Whson. vnlieia. la.
