LIGHT WORKOUT
TRIMS HUSKERS
FOR AMES TILT
Bearg Taking no Chances with
Warriors; McMullen Back
In Lineup
, Making sure that no men will be
on the sidelines Saturday because of
practice injuries, Coach Bearg limit
ed yesterday's practice to dummy
scrimmage. Stress was placed on
the forward pass and the kicking
game.
The Husker squad that will meet
Ames Saturday afternoon will pro
bably have Sprague and Lawson at
the ends, Ashburn and Stiner at
tackles, Whitmore and McMullen at
guards, Grow at center, Stephens at
quarter, Presnell and Dailey at the
halves, and Oehlrich at fullback.
This is the combination that has been
used most of the week and looks like
the best bet for the Saturday contest.
Lloyd Grow has seen service at
center in previous games of the sea
son, but this week he will start a
game for the first time. McMullen
whose injuries have kept him out
of the Missouri and Kansas games,
will be back in his regular position at
guard.
The other injured players, Jug
Brown, Blue Howell, Wally Marrow,
Clarence Eaish, and Frank Mielenz,
and back in suit but will probably
not see action against the Iowa State
crew as Coach Bearg is taking no
chances of having his squad handi
capped with injuries when they
tackle the formidable Kaggie team
from Manhatten November 13.

Chick Meehan Pushes Gridmen
Hard in Scrimmage For
, Fordham Game
New York, Oct. 28. It was scrim- J
mage, scrimmage, scrimmage for the
nnconquered New York University
eleven this week in preparation for
one of the hardest contests on its
schedule, against Fordham in the
Yankee Stadium next Saturday after
noon. Head Coach "Chick" Meehan
realizes that his Violets mast produce
a vastly improved game over their
Rutgers showing in order to cope
with the seasoned Maroon team.
For the second time this year, Mee
han had his entire squad out for Mon
day scrimmage this wee"t. The 30-0
triumph over Rutgers failed to earn
the Heights players a respite, for
they showed many flaws in that
game, and these must be remedied
daring the next few days. For that
reason it is expected N. Y. U. will
have another scrimmage today, and
the usual Wednesday mixup.
The Maroon conquered the Violet
machine last year 25-6, and this is
one of the two defeats Buffered last
season by N. Y. U. that Meehan is
especially desirous of wiping out.
Iowa State Not
Touted Easy By
Husker Coaches
The notion held by football fans
that the Nebraska Comhuskers will
have easy sailing when they meet the
Iowa State football eleven at Lincoln
Saturday is scoffed at by Cornhusker
athletic officials.
Last Saturday, the Cyclones held
the strong Missouri Tiger team to a
7 to 3 score, and thereby took rank
as one of the strong teams of the
Valley. The -week previous the Ames
team outplayed Grinnell in every de
partment of the game in a tie game
played on the Pioneer home field.
Coach Workman of Iowa State,
himself a former Ohio State star
football player and Simpson college
coach, has brought the Cyclones up
rapidly. Starting with an entirely
green squad, he has developed his
men until he has a fighting bunch of
footballers who know the game and
play it every minute.
KAGGIES POINT TO
ARKANSAS BATTLE
Undefeated So Far, Kansas Aggies
Prepare for Hard Game with
Southern Aggregation
Manhattan, Kansas, Oct. 28. With
last Saturday's terrific battle with
Oklahoma University, in which the
Kansas Aggies snatched p.way victory
after tasting a little of the bitterness
of defeat in the first half, not for
gotten but gradually dimming in the
player's minds, Coach Bachman's
grid warriors are preparing for the
coming clash with Arkansas . univer
sity here tomorrow.
All-victorious so far this season,
but fully realizing the strength of
Coach Francis Schmidt's eleven,
which was beaten by Oklahoma by
one touchdown, the Wildcats are
confident but lack all of the so-called
over-confidence which might have
been the cause of the trend of the
first half in last week's scrimage. Ar
kansas is equally as strong if not a
stronger opponent than Oklahoma in
spito of the 14 to 7 score which re
sulted from the Sooner-Razorback
game, although the former made the
most yardage.
Arkansas has played five games,
winning from Arkansas teachers' col
lege, Mississippi university, Hendrix
college, and Centenary, and losing
to Oklahoma by a single touchdown
made from a fumble. On the other
hand, the purple men have won from
Texas, Creighton, Kansas and Okla
homa universities.
In weight the opposing lines will
be fairly evenly -matched with the
Aggies' average between the wings
about five pounds to the good. Com
paratively the Razorbacks have a
very light backfield but this quartet
is reputed to be shifty and not at all
lacking" in speed.
New York Backfield Men
Called "Four Centaurs"
The "Four Horsemen of Notre
pame have been replaced by the
"Four Centaurs" of New York
University. "Chick" Meehan's
backfield, consisting of Capt.
Frank Briante, Jack Connor, Ken
neth Strong and Archie Roberts
are riding roughshod over all Vio
let opposition this season, and ex
perts .are comparing them very
favorably to Knute Rockne's quar
tette. Briante is one of the finest
plunging backs in the country;
Strong is the longest punter in the
game today, and can hit the line,
as well as receive and throw
passes, as can Connor, who is con
sidered one of the "smartest"
quarterbacks on any college grid
iron. Roberts is a shifty running
back and an expert pass catcher.
This combination will show their
wares again next Saturday against
Fordham in the Yankee Stadium.
Grantland Rice, who originated
the "Four Horsemen" was the first
to tack the "Four Centaurs" on
the New York University back-field.
K. U. Daily Comments
On Nebraska's Ability
The University Daily Kansan's
comment on the game last Saturday
was about that one characteristic
which Nebraska teams always seem
to possess; and that is the ability to
discover weakness in an opponent
and hammer it until a touchdown is
made. When Nebraska found that
yardage could be made on offtackle
plunges, that one hole was hjt and
pounded at until the big red team
scored. Nebraska has played this
way for 20 years.
