Paper NO CAMPUS EXCITEMENT (By New Student Service.) NEW YORK To the yellow press all news of "atheism" in the colleges is Hot Stuff. Eagerly the readers of the penny press await the latest abnormality out of the devilish labor atories of Godless scholars. Leopold and Loeb . . . Pacifists and Reds op posing compulsory drill . . . Damned Souls clubs . . . What next? New Thriller Appears Latest of the thrillers is the Reli gious Number of "Jester", appear ing quietly enough on the Columbia University campus. On the frontes piece appears the God of Gold with monstrous paunch and flabby chops. At his feet is a cannon the offering of the Faithful with the motto "We must be Prepared." There are car toons and satiric thrusts at religion as practiced in the U. S .A. in the year 1926. Downtown the reception was jaz zier. "The New York American," a link in the Hearst chain, screamed on the front page of the final edi tion: SACRILEGE IN COLUMBIA "JESTER" STIRS FURORE "Pastor Raps faculty for Agnosti cism of Students, Methodist Preach er Terms It Spirit of "Smart Aleck" Youth of Today; Hits Teachings Investigation of Editorial Staff Threatened for Satirical Expression and Illustrations." Minister (Quoted Consenting to be quoted, ,Rev. Christian F. Rcisner a local pastor said: "It is the spirit of the day mani festing itself. In large measure it is the product of iconoclastic teachings of the modern professors, and the re sult of this teaching is to produce immature agnostics. "An example ought to be made of the editors of some of these college publications. Here in this city dur ing the past week we have had two scandals that of N. Y. U. and now Columbia. The youths are getting too cocky in their attitude toward the decent and even toward the sacred things in life." Amuaed on Campus On the campus the newspaper out burst was viewed with amusement. As yet it has stirred no one except a few "Jester" agents who boosted the price from 25 to 50 cents and did a considerable business. Those who wonder at this comic which is not composed of the usual jokes about petting and has no atro cious puns will leaf quickly to the edi torial page for illumination on this marvel : "Yet Editaurus is distinctly aware that the material he has presented on these pages may not be acceptable to same, even though it were done with the genius of a Voltaire or an Abelard. In such cases, Editaurus, fully aware of his own limitations and prejudices and shortcomings, would cry 'Look to yourselves!' If there is to be any value in Religious experi ence, any worth in the trappings and traditions of the Established Church, they must be strong enough and true enough to stand the fire of intellec tual criticism and estimate. There will be those who will rise up in wrath, metaphorically speaking. For these, too, Editaurus, dear soul, has a word. 'If the shoe fits . . . !" Training required, opportunities for advancement and rewards of social service, especially as compared with the ministry, were described here by F. J. Bruni, professor of applied so ciology at Washington University, St. Louis, in a talk to University of Kansas students. Trofcssor Bruni's address was the second in a scries on tho choice of a lifework. Professor Bruni spent five years in the minis try, which he explained is thoroughly standardized, but, he said, "Social work is brutally inadequate in its training. Most of us, in my generation, got in without any. While in theory, the best schools require two years of training, and insist that these bo graduate years, there is rot one in a hundred who go into social work under such auspices. The rank and file of social workers are caught as they pass likely young men and women graduating from college who come under the influence of some social worker." Social ' Worker and Minister The minister was described as hav ing a definite, and fairly important social status in the community, but the social worker, because his pro fession is so new, has none of this status, and there is as yet no provi sion for the old age of those who give a life of service through social work. Throughout my whole ministry, which was, however, loss than five years, I had no offers of better posi tions, and when I had to make a chango, which was twico, it was done with extreme difficulty. The situa tion may be somewhat improved now. "My experience in social work was the exact reverse. Going into it by accident and somewhat reluctantly, there has never been a year in the nearly twenty I have been in it in which I have not received most flat tering offers, and none in the last ten years in which I have not actually placed in positions of great import ance young men and young women in whose training I have had some part. For the well-trained social worker the demand exceeds the supply." The next paper of the vocational series will be by L. W. Mayberry, su perintendent of the Wichita public schools. Reginald Denny in "Skinner's Dress Suit" at the Lyrio Do clothes make the man? You'll think so when you see Denny brecse through his rollicking comedy of a man and a dress suit and Honey, his wife, who spent the raise he didn't get and made him a million. It's tho most hilarious funny-bone tickler ever screened. Denny himself never made a merrier and with adorable Laura La Plante as "Honey" well you'd better see if you care for happiness. Unusually interesting news, topical, and travel subjects, and on tho stage, Mildred and Lucille Wiseman, a dainty duo of volcalists and instrumentalists who won first honors at the National American Mu sical Festival in 1924. An interpre tative musical program will be ren dered by Ernest Harrison's Lyric or chestra and Mrs. May M. Mills, Or ganist. Adv. WANT ADS ATTENTION : Sororities and Fra tornities.
