THE BETTING MENACE Not years ago in one of the Val ley schools there was agitation for removal of the athletic director. There was an opinion among indi viduals that the teams of the school should win all of the games and dis regard sportmanship. The situation went so far that the athletic board of control called a meeting and talk ed over the situation with the coach. When given a chance to speak for himself the coach told that body of men that if they could find any com plaint from any one of standing out side the bettors, he would resign. The investigation was carried on through and the matter dropped for they found that the coaches' state ment was correct. At its monthly meeting, the N Club composed of Nebraska athletes, went on record as opposed to bet ting on intercollegiate contests. The members pledged themselves to make a determined effort to discourage the practice. This fall, as in other years, Ne braska has a good football team. Only the coach and the athlete know the impossibility of winning every contest on the schedule. Hav ing felt the thrills of victory and the pangs of defeat more keenly than the crowd, they are able to know this. It is the athlete then, when a victim of the popular pastime of betting, who feels the oppression of the bet ting wolves who yearly howl at his heels and the heels of the coach fol lowing a defeat. Naturally enough, being the vic tim of the assault, they have investi gated to find the source of he dis satisfaction. Always it points to the gambler. The big loser on the game is the man who laments most SI Abo The ve Others wherever you find a group of well dressed col lege fellows there you p will find fellows suited at j Ellinger'g. Victory in every game does not always picture successful season. It is the sDirit of the game, and the reflection on the followers that will stamp the success of any team. So the N Club, the men who year in and year out compete for Neb raska, winning and losing as chance allows it, have seen the need for an immediate discontinuance of the practice of wholesale betting on in tercollegiate games. They have ta ken the initial steps toward stopping it. these men who are trying to up hold the honor of Nebraska. We as students have stood by them on the field of battle. Our task now is to stand by them as they battle this ele ment of betting which has turned the game of football from a great sport to a ereat venture, with the money losers displaying as great a lack -f sportsmanship as they displayed luck of judgment in the laying of their bets.
