DESCRIBES FINDING
OF SINGING MOUSE
Dr. Powers Say. Curious Animal Sitt
On Haunches and Makes Noise
Lilca Cricket
A singing mouse is the latest rnr.
ious discovery In "animaldom." Dr.
Edwin B. Powers, who was professor
in me department of toology in Neb
raska in the year 1922-23 describes
the strange animal in the forthcom
ing number of the Journal of Ma
mmalogy.
The animal was found, according
to Dr. Powers by his friend, Dr. Mor
gan. The former had been troubled
by a curiuos noise which thmxrh at.
tributed to a leaky radiator valve.
upon investigation, was found to be
coming from a waste paper basket.
When he shook the basket, a mouse
ran out and Dr. Morgan gave chase.
When the mouse was not movine.
it would sit on its haunches and sing,
even under the excitement of the
chase. Its singing was similar to
the noise of a cricket but much more
continuous. The mouse was injured
in the capture and died the next day
despite efforts to keep it alive for
further investigation. A naturalist
identified the musical mouse as the
common variety of house mouse.
