The season for class honorary so cieties interfraternity organizations is, perhaps, a better name is upon us. ' These societies rank along with the class presidencies and the class com mittees as one of the more useless outlets to which those students, who come to college to acquire a reputa tion for activity instead of to develr op themselvfis, devote their energy. Founded in the past, most of them for some purely political reason, they have now a tradition which lends them an air of pseudo-greatness. Their activities are negligible and for the most part neither important nor valuable. One of them, for example, administers the elementary course in the mob mind inflicted on the fresh men at the beginning of every year we refer to the green-cap tradi tion. Another manages the newly in stituted Dads Day, a duty which could as well be performed by a committee appointed for the purpose. With the exception of such activity as this, they are content with taking an initiation fee from their members; staging an initiation which is some times brutal, sometimes ritualistic; having their pictures in the Corn husker; and giving an annual party. The time may come when an ap praisement will show their actual val ue and they will be junked. For the present they are tolerated, approved, even applauded, with a docility which docs not speak well for the critical spirit of the students. Calendar Thursday, April 16. The alleged immorality of their members often furnishes grounds for attacks on Greek-letter fraternities. The notion is prevalent that fratern ity houses are dens of iniquity. It is a notion fostered, in part, by the newspaper headline writers, for whom the word3 "fraternity man" seem to have an irresistible attrac tion, and by the irodern novelists, whose portrayal of fraternity life leaves the uninitiated with the im pression that Sodom and Gomorrih, at their worst, offered no more fre quent opportunities for sin. To those who are acquainted with the college fraternity and with all undergraduate life as well, this is nonsense. The membership of a fra ternity is simply a cross-section of the body of the students in any par ticular college or university. In it one finds the same virtues and the same sins to be found among college men, or, rather, young men, general ly. There is no more dissipation among the members of a Greek-letter society than there is among a comparable group of non-fraternity men. Whenever a large number of young men are collected in one place, a certain amount of dissipation and riotous living result, but this is a general condition, not one confined to any particular group. There are valid and serious charg es which can be made against the present tendencies of the Greefc-let-ter system, but immortality is not one of them. Field work is carried out at Bangor, Me; Boston. Mass., and Buffalo, N.Y.; in plants producing sulphite and soda pulp, paper, caustic soda, chlorine, heavy acids and iilts, sugar, coke, gas, steel and other chemical products. The more important operations of Chemical Engineering, as typified by the abore processes, are studied systematically by testa and experiments on actual plant apparatus, thus fixing in the student's mind the principles of Chemical Engineering and correlating these principles with practice. The work is non-remunerative and- independent of plant control, the whole attention of the students being directed to study and experimentation. Registration is limited, u students study and experiment ia small groups and receive individual instruction. Admission requires adequate' preparation in chemistry and esgiseeriBg. Able students can complete the requirements for tkc Matter of Science degree in one and a half yean.
