Moro thai, ninety institutions nro
'ontorod in tho third annual Univer
sity of Kansas relays to bo hold at
Memorial Stadium hero Saturday,
April 18, it was announced after n
final chockinjr up of entry blanks
following tho closing of ontrios on
April 8.
Twenty-two institutions will send
athletes for tho university class
ovonts, thirty-five for college class
relays, and tho others aro in relay
races for high schools.
Tho institutions entered represent
fourteen states and extend from
Pennsylvania on tho cast to Cali
fornia and Oregon on tho west and
from Minnesota on tho north to
Texas on tho south.

Vacancies
Tho United States Civil Service
Commission announces the following
open compotitivo examinations to
fill vacancies in tho department of
Economics: homo economics special
ist, $3,800 n year, nssocinto homo
economics specialist, $3,000 a year,
nnd assistant homo oconomics special
ist, $2,400 n year. Applications for
these positions will bo accepted until
May 12.
Competitors will not bo required to
report for examination at any place,
but will bo rated on their education,
training, nnd experience, and a thesis
or publication to bo filed with tho
application.
In addition to theso positions, tho
Commission offers an examination
for tho position of Junior Homo Eco
nomics Specialist, at $1,800 a year.
Thoso who enter will bo rated on
prncticnl questions, a thesis to bo de
livered to tho examiner on tho day
of the examination, education, train
ing and experience. Applications
will not bo accepted later than May
9.

annual interfralemity bbaseball

EIGHT YEARS AGO WAR
Eight years ago yesterday the writ
ing finger that writes and having
writ moves on, traced the declaration
of a state of war between the United
States and Germany.
Most of us were younsters in gram
mar school or high school then, and
our participation in the war consisted
mainly of marching with the Boy
Scouts and saving prune pits for gas
masks. Eight years have rolled re
verberating past and the echoes of
each have died away. It is hard for
us to feel again the thrill that cameJ
with the' realization that this was
WAR. The World War is history
now, fast drying to the stark and stif
fened lifelessness of all that is his
tory.
Tho World War did something to
us for a time. When the men came
back from the front they had few
stories of tho glories and the glamor
of the battlefield to tell. Indeed; there
was no battlefield, they said, nothing
but lying in a muddy hell. And
some of them swore that they would
never go to war again if they were
doing the thing all over..
But eight years have passed and
we who were kids in short pants then
are men in college now. And if ex
actly tho same can came to us as
