THOSE INSIDIOUS PACIFISTS Operator 38, who has been trying to track down the person or per sons unknown who attempted to poison the University Night goat, men tioned on the front page, assorts that everything points toward some agent of Paul Blanshard as the criminal. M. Blanshard, who spoke to Nebraska students last fall on world peace and on labor problems,, is known to be an agent of the Third Internationale at Moscow, Russia, since he is reported to have campaigned for LaFollette at the November elections. It is expected that the American Legion. Post No. 3, will soon issue a resolution con demning the action of tho man who poisoned the goat, and praising tne at titude of the University officials, who are doing everything possible to keep it alive. It is reported that University officials do not approve of the series of talks the World Forum has arranged in order to bring about a discussion of military training in the University. These discussions stir the students up, make them restless, and cause them to think. Ergo, they are bad, and have been postponed until after the legislature decides on tho University building-fund levy. The authorities condemn the World Forum for arrang ing talks on controversial subjects. Henry VIII of England, that notorious ruler, put through a bit of legis lation which ahniild Interest University authorities. A rule of this kind would make the situation at Nebraska more comfortable for tho executives. It was entitled, "An Act to Abolish Diversity of Opinion." COQUETTE Cherries hang all along the branch; Red, ripe fruit Round, and almost black with richness. The sun has kissed them " Till they are soft and fragrant. They have the lusciousness of lips, That have been kissed and kissed Of a girl's lips, kissed till they sting with blood. I, too, am a branch, And the red, ripe things that I parade Are hearts. You say I have one heart? No; there are many; - For how could one heart Hold all the loves That I have known. I cannot keep them from ripening. Somehow the sun will touch them; And they drink the rain eagerly Until they, are full and break, And a red dripping Stains the ground. PORTIA. A NOTE ON SELF-HYPNOTISM "Everybody knows why I am in the Legislature," asserted Monte Munn before a meetings of the Junior League of Women Voters, and then went on to explain the reason. Mr. Munn's long training on the old school's foot ball team should have made him more sure of himself. MATINS Every morning, when-1 read the newspapers, if I discover that the social order is still intact, I thank the heavens that, now, I am on the right side. NAPOLEON. THE HIGHER EDUCATION (Dedicated to the eternal English 22) i. The bell rings, and the teacher calls the roll: "Mister Allen, Miss Anderson, Miss Bays; Miss Betzer, Miss Brownell, and Mister Cole; Miss Dailey, Mister Edwards, Mister Hays " And so on, as each student answers "Here!" And straightaway relaxes into sleep. Each student's mind is desert-bleak and drear. The clock hands on their long round slowly creep. The students softly snore. Their peace is deep. LEWIS. A MATTER OF SOME IMPORTANCE He makes love as if he were Romeo, as if it were the most interesting game in the universe. He makes no false moves, says no inappropriate word, performs all the gestures, etherealizes his personality, speaks softly about the stars and criticizes the mythic cosmogony of the savages who inhabit the globe .... The young lady put an end to it all by accepting him at his word; wishing for his improvement (if not his heart) she chided him for being too idealistic. SATYRANUS. A NOTE ON NAMING CHILDREN Dear Montesrey, Have you ever noticed that the names of almost all the great love poets begin with the "s" sound? 'Sappho, Solomon, Shakspear, Swine burne, and Celia. There must be something peculiar about (this partic ular sound. What about a doctor's thesis on it? At least I think it desirable that all parents be informed of my discovery and be guided thereby. JANUS. Reginald, SHE PUTS IT PERSUASIVELY I like them timorous and shy; I loathe a bold monocled eye; For I, you see, quake at the knee, If bad, bold men just look at me. In short, dear Reggie, I'm shy, too, So why can't we be phy a deux? CELIA. FROM THE NOTEBOOK OF ADONIS: A thing of beauty is a joy forever; ideas lose their original glamor with the growth of wisdom. That is why the intelligent man admires a beautiful woman, but does not talk to her. CLAIRE MONTESREY. Andrews Declares Use of Cosmetics By Men Is Femininizing the Country The use of cosmetics by the men is feminizing the United States, accord ing to Neal R. Andrews of New York, at an address recently delivered in Chicago. "Today our rugged males flaunt as much gaiety as the fair sex. Men are patrons of cosmetics. More than 500,000 men in the United States are. using cosmetics secretly," said Mr. Andrews. The same issue of a Rocky Moun tain district college paper, contained a long story about the free distribu tion of sample bottles of well-known and nationally advertised brand of hair tonic to all students of that uni versity. All organizations, clubs, fraterni ties, sororities, and societies were re quested to get in touch withthe man ager of this publicity stunt and turn in the number of samples they de sired. This was the first time that the student body was in the receiving line for something to be given away. A later report showed that the stu dents accepted the gift It was said that at a basketball game, that eve ning it was necessary to stop the game until all the windows could be opened.
