Ten Years Ago
The Pre-Medic Society Journeyed
to the State Hospital for the Insane.
Just how many of the future doctors
rode with the compliments of the
traction company could not be de
termined. There were so many in
the car that it presented a very sani
tary and antiseptic appearance.
Most of the time was spent in ob
serving: cases of insanity and listen
ing to lectures by Chieaeo rjhvRioiana.
The second all-University party
was to be held. Whether the party
was to be a success could not be de
termined as it was said that "the
students of Nebraska have a reputa
tion for quickly becoming: tired of
new ideas, and it remains to be seen
whether this objection will hold good
when applied to this real University
function." It was rumored that
the faculty was to appear in a body
to see themselves as they had been
fty years before. Dancing was to
be the main feature of the evening?.
but an excellent program had been
arranged. Twenty-five cents admis
sion was to be charged.
A banquet and cabaret show had
been arranged for the members of
the Cornhuskcr football team in
Omaha on December 15. The ban
quet was to be open to any Nebraska
booster and over three hundred were
expected to attend. , -
A "Merry Christmas Tae Dav"
sponsored by several campus organi
zations was announced. The plan
was to raise a sum of money with
which to aid poor families of Lincoln
in having a comfortable, and if pos
sible, a merry Christmas.
Final plans had been decided unon
for the new buildings at the College
of Agriculture. $700,000 was to be
available within the next four years
to be applied in the erection of new
buildings and increased equipment.

UNIVERSITIES AND RESEARCH.
If for no other reason, it Seems to
us the budget now filed with the
state budget commissioner is justified
by that paragraph of the introduc
tion which says, "The University can
not escape the responsibility in the
fields of technical and social service,
but must push forward in its pro
gram of research, of teaching, of
leadership, and of service, both on
the campus and off the campus,, to
the people of the state.
We are not easily influenced by
the cry for more and larger build
ings. We hold the buildings of sec
ondary importance to the school. To
us the prime essentials of a univer
sity are those things mentioned above
research, teaching, leadership.
With a certain amount of funds,
the University can function as it has
in the past. It can hold classes. Pro
fessors can be obtained who will
teach the subjects listed in the cata
logue. Students will receive degrees
and will be turned loose upon the
world "educated." But the Univer
sity will not have contributed any
thing to the progress of the world,
and will not take its rightful place
among the great institutions of the
nation.
The great commercial activities re
ly for much of their knowledge upon
the research which is conducted in
universities. The science of medi
cine is advanced by university men,

chiefly from such places as John
Hopkins. Experiments in electricity
and chemistry conducted in univer
sities change the course of human
action. Political science and the so
cial sciences are aided by university
research.
The world at large hears of the
University by reading of the results
of these researches. If for no other
reason, then for the selfish one that
sons and daughters of Ohioans should
be connected with a school which is
contributing to the progress of the
world, the legislature should grant
the budget requested.
Ohio State University must take its
place along with the other universi
ties of the land which are engaged in
education on a larger scale than the
simple teaching of lessons in a class
room. Ohio State Lantern.
