Stiff Scrimmage with Reserves
Shows First String Needs
Work on Defense.
SECOND TEAM MAKES
SEVERAL GOOD GAINS
Stiff scrimmage with the second
team was gone through Tuesday eve
ning and the Varsity showed itself
still a little weak on defense. Sever
al good gains were made by the Blue
team. Dailey, carrying the ball for
the Blues, got away for several gains.
Mielens was at halfback for the
regulars, taking the place of Rhodes,
who' has been shifted to fullback.
Myers, regular fullback, was out with
a slight injury. Ristine took his po
sition. Captain Ed Weir was not in suit
He is staying out of practice to favor
a muscle bruise. Bloodgood, quar
terback, who was out Monday eve
ning, was back in place Tuesday.
"Choppy" Rhodes went through
the Blue team for a number of good
gains during the evening's workout.
His plunging was a feature.
With Missouri, conqueror of Chi
cago University and so far undefeat
ed, coming next Saturday, hard work
will be necessary. The Tigers have
a heavy line and a fast, hard-hitting
backfield this year. They will prob
ably be the Huskers' most dangerous
Valley opponent.
With Dailey and Bronson on the
hurling end, the Blues completed sev
eral passes for good gains and scored
a touchdown against the Varsity. A
long pass from Bronson to Dailey put
the seconds in a position to score.
Locke was put in the lineup with
the first string team shortly before
the practice ended. He made several
gains.

GROSS-COUNTRY
MEN TRY OUT
Competition for Places on
Squad to Go to Conference
Meet Comes Friday.
NEW RUNNERS MAY
MAKE HARRIER TEAM
Cross-country team tryonts for tha
Missouri Valley meet will be held
Friday, October 31, at 4 o'clock. Al
though most of the team members
who ran against Kansas, made a good
showing, there is likely to be some
new runners on the team as a result
of the tryouts. The strength of the
other Valley teams is still a question.
Among the men who helped defeat
Kansas Saturday, Lewis deserves
honorable mention for his clever
race. The two new men on the team,
Lawson and Hays, made a fine show
ing for their first race in Varsity
competition. Ross, who has been
showing only fair form, ran a good
race Saturday.
Two men of the squad last year,
Cohen and Schultz, who have been
having difficulty in getting into
shape, are going to give some one a
hard race. Sarchette and Johnson
will be out to win too.
The team selected from these try
outs will run in the Missouri Valley
meet November 8 and against the
Kansas Aggies at Manhattan, Novem
ber 22.
The Kansas Aggie team appears
to be the strong contenders with
Ames for Valley honors this fall. The
K.S. A. C. harriers have won both
of their dual meets against Kansas
and Missouri. Drake University de
meet, the week following the Grin
feated the Grinnell squad in a close
nell victory over Minnesota. Ames
is an unknown quantity among the
other schools. Kansas has suffered
two defeuts this fall in as many
meets. Saturday the Jayhawks will
meet Oklahoma, victors over the
Hunker team.
Tha Valley meet at Drake will be
one of the biggest ever held. At a
meeting of the Valley officials last
fall, it was decided to allow the
smaller colleges in the Valley states
to compete. This will bring at least
two mora strong teams into the meet,
and several individual stars will be
added to the competition. Oklahoma
A. and M. and Haskell institute have
had teams in the last fewvears that
are equal to any of the big confer
ence schools.
