Debate Students To
Hear Wheeler Speech
The University students in the
course in debate, (English 103) will
resume on Saturday evening, the
custom followed in that course for
years studying the workmanship Of
prominent speakers who appear in
Lincoln. "If we were in a medical
college, we'd call it 4 clinic," said
Prof. H. M. Fogg in announcing that
the class and he would in a group
listen to Senator Burton K. Wheeler
at the Auditorium.

Only Three Cross Country Let
ter Men Are Back for
Work Outs.
When the roll waa called for the
cross country tryouts, Coach J. Lloyd
McMaster was confronted with the
problem of lack of men, there being
only three old letter men reporting
for the workouts Captain Zimmer
man, Jake Schultz, and Jimmie Lewis.
This year Nebraska will probably
have five Mwviouri Valley conference
teams acheduled. The first team the
harriers will encounter will be the
Oklahoma University, October 11
The next encounter is with Kan
sas, October 25, at Lawrence, Kan
sas. The next opposition will proba
bly be that of Missouri, here, Novem
ber 11. The big Missouri Valley
meet to be held at Ames, November
28, will be the final act in the cross
country episode.
Some of the outstanding men re
porting for the workouts are Jack
Ross, who last year made his letter
in the mile run, Jake Cohen, who
made the team last year but was un
able to make his letter owing to an
operation which necessitated his
withdrawal from the squad, Dick
Rogers, one of the best men out in
the earlier part of last season who
waa forced to retire on account of
injury received during practice.
Coach McMaster reported twenty
tifght men out for each evenings
workout, but that this was insuffi
cient from the standpoint of effec
tive and keen competition.
McMaster has been making some
very careful surveys of the running
and long-distance game, and after a
talk .with Joie Say, and Bay Watson,
the worlds greatest mile runners.
that the cross-country run was a very
helpful aid to men expecting to par
ticipate in the sprints.
A new and complete course has
been mapped out, with red and white
arrows at every turn showing the di
rection to be followed. It is super
ior to any of the former courses be
cause there is not as much paving.
The course begins on the cinder path
within the stadium and goes out
through the northwest gate, over the
viaduct on. Tenth Street, north to
New Hampshire Street, west to Ninth
Street, north to Adams and Belmont
streets, the S. Y. A. back to the
viaduct, and then into the Stadium
again. This will be surveyed by the
engineers to find the elevations and
exact distances.

Squad to Have a Letter Man in
Every Class Except 135

With wrestling practice already
started and seven letter men return
ing this year, Dr. R. G. Clapp, profes
sor of physical education and head
coach of the wrestling team, anti
cipates a successful season at the
mat sport. One letter man la re
turning in each of the weight classes
except in the 185-pound class. Ne
braska's grapplers last year started
the season with only one letter man
back, but finished the year aa cham
pions of the Missouri Valley confer
ence and .the Western Inter-Collegiate
Wrestling Association.
Dr. Clapp expressed the need of
more men out for wrestling. The
sport has been made a major sport
this year and ranks on the same
plane with basketball, track and base
ball. "We want to have at least two
first-class men in each class this
year, in order to be able to meet
any emergency caused by accident or
injury to regular men," said Dr.
Clapp.
Practice is starting this week. At
present, and probably for the next
few weeks, the teams will work out
in the Armory Monday, Wednesday
and Friday from 4 to 6 o'clock each
week. Later, practices will be held
every day.
Claude Swindell, former Nebras
ka wrestler is assistant coach.
Approximately seven meets will
compose the schedule. Northwestern
University and Ames are under two
year contracts and will meet the Ne
braska squad in Lincoln. Kansas
will probably renew its contract, as
will Iowa State. In this case, the
Kansas meet will be held here and
the Iowa competition at Iowa City.
One other dual meet will probaby
be slated. In addition to these five
the Cornhuskers will journey to the
Missouri .Valley Championship meet
and the Western Inter-Collegiate
Wrestling Association meet
The letter men returning this year
