Seventeen Students Contribute
to Volume of Nebraska Verse
Seventeen students contributed to
Nebraskas first book of student
verse which is on sale at Lincoln
bookstores and the Regents campus
bookstore.
The poem winning the first prizs
of $50 offered by alumni of the class
of '98, was written ,by Janet Pressley,
a graduate student. It follows:
APOCALYPSE.
I dare not be too long aione
Lest I awake and find me gon-s;
Lest there come thunder in my ears,
The rush of wings, the clash of
spears,
Theriving of timber, and in my eyes,
The stinging smoke of Paradise;
Lest heaviness should halt my blood
In its swift course, a seething flood
Of molten, lava, burning wine
Possess this body I call mine,
Rush hotly through my .finger-tips,
Strike leaping flames from my
parched lips,
Filling my veins with such a fire
As Sidon knew or ravaged Tyre.
Under my breast my heart might
grow
Too hot and high to be held so.
My sentient self might rise and say,
"I am very strong; I will not stay.
I am not you nor any woman;
I am not God, I am not human.
It is no task to tear apart
The puny prison of your hsart.
I dare not be too long alone
Lest I awake and find me gone."
The poem which took second prize
a $25 offered by the Vestals of the
Lainn. honorary organization for
women of th College of Arts and
Sciences, was written by Helen Rum-
hons. It is:
TO ONE UNKNOWN.
Time has set our trysting place,
And Love has marked the day;
I know not if it be tonight,
Or many years away.
Sometimes I hate the many days
That Ire between us two,
Sometimes I bless the surging
years
That bear me on to you.
Both these, women are members
of Chi Delta Phi, women's honorary
literary sorority.
Of the forty-seven poems in the
book the majority are rhymed and
metrical. Over a third, however,
are free verse. Only some half
dozen men contributed to the vol
ume, hy far the greater part of the
work having been written by women.
Among the students who have sev
eral poems in the book are Mildred
Burcham, lone Gardner, Janet Press
ley, Emily Ross, and Helen Rum
mons. Miss Gardner's contributions
are all free verse, while Miss Ross
works entirely in ths rhymed pat
terns. Miss Burcham and Miss Press-
ley have written most of their poems
in metrical and rhymed form, while
Miss Rummons is divided about
equally between' the two forms.
Other students who have con
tributed to the volume are Margaret
Cannell, Mariana Cummings, Audrey
Diller, Henry Eller, Wilbur Gaffnsy,
Catherine LaMaster, Marie Mengers,
Jere Mickel, Esther Swanson, Verna
Trine, Mary Ure, and John Virtue.
The poems, except for the two
prize-winning compositions, are ar
ranged alphabetically by authors.
