Tracksters Make Fast Time
Layton Breaks Season
Record in Quarter.
Tryouts held yesterday for the
Drake relays at Des Moines Friday
and Saturday brought out some fast
time and showed the possibilities of
the new Husker quarter mils outdoor
jtrack. The fastest time of the day
as made in the 440 when Red Lay
ton hung up a new Husker season
record of 52:1. Locke ran a con
sistent 100-yard dash in tw heats
both of which he completed in 10:1.
Cohen lowered the old low mark for
the mile run when he ran around
the new track four times in 4:42:3.
The old record of 4:43 was made
by Lewis on the indoor track. Zim
merman came in second yesterday
with a time of 4:43:3.
Crites took the lead in the second
round of the 880 and finished ahead
of Capt Mud Gardner. Whipper
man was running the 440 in good
form yesterday.
The final selection for the Husker
team that Schulte will take to the
Drake relays will be made this af
ternoon. There will be about twenty-
five men on the squad. The squad
leaves Thursday at 1:50.
FRESHMAN BASEBALL
NINE MEETS VARSITY
The varsity and freshman baseball
squads mixed at Rock Island park
yesterday in one of the most strenu
ous workouts of the season. Lewel
len and Peterson pitched for the var
sity and Edwards, Dohmeier and
Smaha were on the mound for the
yearlings. No score was kept.
The lineup for the next game,
which is with the Kansas Aggies who
are here on May 2 and 3, is becom
ing more and more uncertain. Coach
W. G. Kline has made several new
finds since the trip south and it is
not unlikely that he will present a
very different lineup to the Aggies.

Geological Specimens
Are Given to Museum
The museum has recently received
specimens of minerals and fossils
from the geologists who took the
spring trip to Newcastle, Wyo.
Among the finer minerals given to
the museum was a specimen of
alunogen, native aluminum sulfate,
or as it is commonly called, "hair's
salt" and "feather alum." The
alunogen was found in long, white
crystals in an abandoned drift in
the Cambria coal mine of Cambria,
Wyo.

tists week thruout the world. Vaude
ville artists have always been will
ing to donate their services to any
woVthy cause, this was fully demon
strated during the war and Liberty
Loan drives. The entire receipts
from the N. V. A. Benefit ball and
Mid-nite frolic to be held at the
Auditorium Friday night of ' this
week will go to the N. V. A. fund
maintained for the sick and dis
tressed of its members. It will be
the largest vaudeville show ever held
in this city, fifteen vaudeville acts
nnd over one hundred musicians, in
cluding Paul Zimm and his Chicago
ans will take part in the big jambo
ree. The union musicians have do
nated their services and will unite
with the vaudeville artists in making
the event a gala one. Watch the
daily papers for full particulars.
