Rumors Unfounded
Say Harvard Profs
Professors at Harvard University
have recently been greatly aroused
over numerous rumors to the effect
that their institution is lacking in
moral and religious thought. Harv
ard is not dominated by a Y. M. C.
A. organization or one of its type
and the college does not have a com
pulsory chapel. Investigation on the
part of eastern authorities finds that
unon these facts the rumors seem
to be founded.
Prof. E. Caldwell Moore, chair
man of the board of preachers at
Harvard, and professor of Christian
morals, is much amused at the report
that Christian associations have of
fered prayers for "Godless. Harvard."
That the turmoil during the chapel
services at Yale is due to me xaci
that chapel is compulsory, is the
belief of Dr. Moore. "Compulsory
chupel at Harvard would be as dis
tasteful to officers of the college as
to the students," states the professor.
"Here, every man who attends
chanel does it because he wants to,"
states the Harvard Crimson following
an interview with various school
authorities. "The emphasis here is
on individual thinking and rational
ideas of religion. We do not want
standardization of ideas and ideals.
Thirteen colleges may have got down
on their knees at Indianapolis re
cently and prayed for us, but prayers
and advice are not likely to make our
chapel better or worse."
