Missouri vs. Washington at St, Louis. Drake vs. Oklahoma at Norman. While that wholesale juggle of the basketball was being exhibited at the Armory Monday night, Washington University cagesters added their third straight Valley conference cage victory and managed to hold top position in the conference race. Both Nebraska and the St. Louis artists have clean slates after the first week of pUy with the southerners having a lone game lead over the Kline quintet. Oklahoma dropped into a tie for second place with Grinnell following the Iowans, win over Missouri Mon day 25 to 18. Both teams are justly knotted for the runner-up honors with percentages of .500 having a win and a lose credited and both Grinnell and Oklahoma have made fifty counters to- the same number by their opponents. Ames made first appearance Monday in Valley cage circles by losing a hot mix to Wash ington 30 to 26. Have Strong Offense. From early season showings the assertion may rightfully be made that all conference quintets have strong offensive combinations. From comparative scores, this is expected to result in the hottest race in years. Every team played conference con tests except Kansas, winners of the title last season. The Jayhawks are apt to make things short and snappy when they meet Drake at Lawrence Friday. Grinnell Shows Ability. Grinnell demonstrated a new brand of ball against the Missouri team Monday. The showing of Ames against Washington stamps the Iowa teams as strong contenders. ' The Indians are slight favorites over the Des Moines athletes at Norman this week-end. The outstanding games carded this week-end seem to be be tween Washington and Missouri and Ames and Grinnell. During the next few weeks the upper division teams are expected to change positions, since a single con test could down one team and lift another. Washington grabbed the pole in the race at the end of the first week defeating Grinnell 32 to 27 and disposing of Drake 35 to 25. LINCOLN TYPEWRITER CO. 1232 O St. Phone B2157 mm .i Si 13 Tryouts for positions on the swim ming team which were to have taken place the latter part of this week, have been postponed by Coach Ad kins, and will probably be held the early part of next week. The rea son for the delay is that the date for the first meet, which is to be with Creighton or the Omaha Athletic club, has not yet been definitely ar ranged, and Adkins wants to hold the tryouts a few days before the meet. The tryouts will be held over' a period of several days in order to allow men to compete for different events on different days. The com rfritinns will be free for all re gardless of registration in swimming and likely as not, a dark horse will appear, as in previous years, and make the team. The squad is still weak in the backstroke swimming number and this "event is one especially favorable for the last minute candidate for the team. All the other positions on the team are pretty well contested, and Adkins is developing a group of swimmers that will hold its own in any Valley contest. Probably the hardest meet of the year will be with the Omaha Athletic club which has been turning out speedy teams and championship swimmers under the direction of Pete Wendell. Creighton university also has a strong swimming team each year. The swimmers at Creigh ton are fortunate in having a swim ming pool as part of the gymnasium equipment. Two hundred . seventy-live rifle teams from all parts of the U. S. and its possessions have been entered in the national R. O. T. C. rifle com petition for the Hearst trophy. With the basketball season getting well under way, some excellent pros pects for fast high school teams have developed. As usual, the Omaha and Lincoln high teams are showing up well, and other teams throughout the state are showing good class. Ne braska University has always been interested in high school athletics, since it is expected that they will at tend school here some day. The Uni versity N club, composed of the let ter men in all branches of sport, each year sponsors the state high school basketball tournament, which has now grown to be the largest high school tournament in the world. To create a closer feeling between high schools and the state University, the Daily Nebraskan urges high schools throughout the state to send reports of their games to it for pub lication.
