Track practice starts immediately
after the holidays with an expected
turnout of around five hundred men,
Coach Schulto stated yesterday in is
suing the call for the first official
track practice of the year.
Handicapped in previous years by a
poor field, and last year having no
field at all, the Nebraska track teams
under the tutelage of Coach Schulte
have won the Missouri Valley confer
ence championship for the last three
years, and this year with a good prac
tice field coupled with the large turn
out expected, prospects are the
brightest in Nebraska track history.
In bad weather the squad will
practice under the east side of the
stadium, and in good weather will
workout outdoors. The circular
board track is located in the south
part of the field and the straight
away is in front of the east stand.
In addition there is a cinder path
around the football field, and the
whole football field available for
various field events.
Medical students from Omaha are
again well represented in the num
ber of candidates, and will journey
d6wn to Lincoln for the meta as in
previous years.
First Meet at Kan. as City
The first meet in which Nebraska
will participate is to take place on
February 15 at Kansas City where
the atheletic Club is sponsoring a
meet in which all Missouri Valley
'schools and those adjacent territory
are invited to take part:
In the dashes, the turnout i3 going
to be composed of new men almost
entirely. Letter men Noble, Trexler,
aldwinB and Lloyd are lost to the
squad by graduation and removal to
other schools. Noble graduates this
semester, and his loss will be felt
keenly in this event. Trexler and
Baldwin and Lloyd are lost to the
went to the University of Southern
California this year. Luhens is the
only letter man left.
The dashes will have to be filled
by Hein, Locke, Rhodes, Beerkle,
Whipperman, Sherrick, Wirsig, and
Bloodgood. These men are nearly
all sophomores and did great work
in the freshmen meet last year.
Schulte will have a lot of good ma
terial from which to develope an
other valley leader in this event.
Veterans for Quarter Mile.
The quarter mile run has the great
est number of veterans listed in pros
pective candidates. They include
letter men Layton, Gardner, Lukens,
and Crites, in addition to varsity
men McAllister, Woodard and R. De
witz. Men showed up well in this
event last spring and who will make
a bid for it this year are Bloodgood,
Ballah, Robertson, Rhodes, Locke,
Whipperman, Butler, Sherrick.
Three varsity men, will turn out
for the half mile grind. The var
sity men are Gardner, Johnson and
Haskell. The other competitor for
this event will be Butterand.
The mile and two mile runs are
well represented by veteran material
in the form of Clemmons, and Cohen,
lettermen, and varsity man Haskell.
Other promising candidates for this
feature are Scholtz, Sprague, Dick
on r.owis and Zimmerman.
In the high hurdles Layton, a let
ter man, will compete with Gisn, a
varsity man, and the two will battle
against a field of new candidates,
Weir, Beerkle, Rhodes, Reese, Wir
sig Ballah, and Popelar.
Three letter men Crites, Kenncr
and Lukens appear in the low hur
dles prospects at present, together
with varsity man Gish. In addition
to these veterans there are new men
Weir, Boerkle, Locke, Rhodes, and
Reese.
The high jump will contested for
by Hobb Turner, Hatch and Parks,
letter men, and Drishaus, varsity
man, as well as sophomores Rhodes,
Beerkle, and Weir.
Hatch, letter man, and varsity
man, Kcnner, appear as tho veterans
in view for the broad jump. Others
who look promising are Rhodes,
Sherrick, Wirsig, Weir, Locke, and
Hein.
Many Try Discus.
Tho discus' throw has tho largest
number of veterans out in the field
events. There are four letter men,
Myers, Ilartman, Parks, and Hatch.
Frazier is a varsity man booked for
this event.

only letter man, but there is a strong
field of varsity men in II.DewiZ, Hen
ricksen, and Frascr. Popelar is a
promising sophomore in this exhibi
tion. Duke Gleason and Brown are let
ter men that will come out for the
pole vault. Frazier, varsity man,
will be out also. The competition
for this part of the team will be keen
with such a galaxy of new material
as Rhodes, Wirsig, Weir, Davis, and
Popelar.
PLAN SWIMMING MEET
WITH WASHINGTON 1).
Comhusker Tank Team Faces
Hard Schedule This
Year.
Washington University at St,
Louis has been added to Nebraska'
swimming schedule, and a meet will
be held at St. Louis on February 23,
according to an announcement yes
terday by Coach Frank Adkins.
Washington will probably come to
Lincoln next year for a return meet.
The team will go again to St.
Louis in March for the Missouri Val
ley conference swimming meet which
is to be held on March 21 and 22.
Four other trips will round out
the swimming schedule. Meets con
templated and now in the process of
negotiation by the athletic office are
with Ames, Kansas Aggies, Omaha
Athletic club, and Creighton at Oma
ha. The preliminary pourparlours
have been finished in all cases and it
is all a matter of arranging satisfac
tory dates for the meets.
The schedule this year is the big
gest yet attempted by the swimming
team, and will include six tripB when
completed. It is the best in tho' his
tory of tho sport at Nebraska, accord
ing to Frank Adkins who has parti
cipated in all swimming events
held at Nebraska, either as member
of the team or coach.
Tho team still needs somo more
men for the backstroke and breast-
stroke swims, and more candidates
for the' entire squad are needed in
tho sport to come to tho practice ses
sions at the Y. M. C. A. or else see
him in the gymnasium during the
day.
Eight points won In dual meets Is
tho requirement for a letter in swim
ming. Winning a place in a valley
conference meet is accepted in lieu
of tho eight points. The system of
scoring is similar to that nsed in
track meets.
