T CONCRETE SEWER PIPE TESTED BY UNIVERSITY Professor Evinger Secure Sec tions Such as Used by City of Lincoln. Through the co-operation of Trof. M. I. Evingrer, of the department of civil engineering, and Dean A. Mars ton of the Iowa State College of Engineering, the University was able to obtain for testing purposes eight sections of reinforced concrete pipe, selected from those manufactured for the reconstruction of the Lincoln out fall sewer, which failed during the spring months of this year. Three sections of the pipe, one month old, have been tested in the testing laborary of the applied me chanics department. They, as the rest, were lock-joint pipe with an in side diameter of fifty-one inches, a laying length of four feet, and a thickness of shell of five inches. "Three other sections will be tested in the laboratory after the pipe has cured for a longer period of time. Two other sections are now being tested under actual trench conditions. It is believed that as a result of the tests in progress some very practical correlations will be developed be tween the design and the laboratory tests of the pipe on one hand, and the actual conditions to be met with in practice on the other hand," said Professor Evinger. These pipe are among the largest that have been subjected to labora tory test and are serving as a prac tical experience to the students. Professors Evinger and Duff are now carrying on tests and special in vestigations of a clay product, com mercially known as Segment Blocks, now commonly used in sewer con struction, and used by Lincoln in the construction of the outfall sewer, but which failed in the spring rains last year. It is believed that these tests will prove of especial value to muni cipal engineers, and for that reason Dean Ferguson hopes that the results may be published in bulletin form for general distribution among those interested. section of a school survey being con ducted there, it was announced last Thursday.
