PRACTICE GRIND STARTSMONDAY Several Football Men Expected to Join Coach Kline's Floor Men BASKETEERS TO START WORKING IN EARNEST By William Cejnar As the curtain falls on the pig skin sport, basketball is being ushered in as the rotond major sport of the University. Candidates for the five have been busily er gaged the past two weeks in basket shooting, and developing team work. The ending of the football season will bring several more men to basketball prac tice, and the long grinding prepare tion for a winter of hard games will begin next Monday. The cage sport outlook was never as bright in Cornhusker history as it is now; Four lotter men and three varsity men are reporting from last year. However, Nebraska's best as set in this sport is a coach who has had many years of coaching and knows the game inside and out; who is the originator of the five-man de fense which he first showed to the world nine years ago in a game against Nebraska when he brought his Nebraska Wesleyan five to the Armory. Kline) it Head Coach Coach W. G. Kline, new head mentor for basketball, comes to Ne braska from Florida University where he was head coach of all athletics for the past three years. Previous to that Kline was for eight years head coach at Nebraska Wesleyan. Kline is a graduate of the Ne braska College of Law. He received his LL. B. degree in 1916. During the war, when the S. A. T. C. was in charge of all athletics, Kline was football coach, and coach of freshman basketball at Nebraska. After that he entered the practice of law, only to be called back to athletics again as head coach and director of athletics at Florida University. Kline Win Confidence The coming of Coach Kline as mentor of basketoall put new life into the squad and prospects for a successful year immediately grew brighter. Several men who are now playing their senior year were in Kline's freshman team when he coached the yearling basketball squad after the war. Kline's freshmen of that year won the Valley champion ship in the year following, partly be cause of Kline's expert coaching in the fundamentals of the game. The men have confidence in Kline and fans expect Nebraska again to take its natural .place as leader in the Valley conference. Of the thirty or more men who have reported so far many are try ing for "forwards, and the team will be a hard-fighting offensive machine when it gets under way. Among the guards the turnout is slightly less, but three letter men and a string of former high-school stars will fill these positions. L The chief problem seems to be that of finding a tall man for the center SAFETY You are safe when you entrust your eyes to our care because we employ all modern methods. FLAVOR LASTS i am position. If no six-footer or better can be found Kline will have to train a good jumping center. He has as candidates for this position several men who played a conspicuous game in high school, earning mention on mythical all-star teams. Four Letter Men Out Four letter men who are showing up well every night are: Captain Usher, Cozier, Tipton, and Volz. Tipton was a center last year and also played guard. In the latter position he was a worry to all op ponents, and will more than likely be used there this year. Volz was guard last year and will play in that department again this year. Captain Usher and Cozier are both forwards with a wicked eye for the basket hoop, and are goal drib blers. Varsity men who lacked only sev eral minutes of making their letters last season are toodson and Wyant. Goodson lacked only twenty minutes. He is on the football squad at pres ent and will report for basketball next Monday. Wyant played a Btrong game last year but injuries pre vented him earning a letter. He is on the squad now and will offer dangerous competition. High Start Practice Some of the candidates who were well-known in high school basketball two years ago, are Black, Beerkle, Olds, Ekstrom, and Lewellen. -Leo Black was center on the Grand Island five and a terror to opponents. He was selected an all state center on all mythical teams of that year. Beerkle, of Omaha Central, also placed on all state teams of that year, and was Central high's best basket shooter in 1922. Seaton Opens Jan. 5 The season will open five weeks from next Saturday when Missouri journeys to Lincoln for a game on January 5. Missouri always puts out a good cage squad.' They are favored every year with a turnout of medium weight men who make good basket ball teams. Nebraska will have one of its toughest games when the Co lumbians invade Huskerdom. The complete schedule which has not yet been finally approved, is of the round robin type introduced by Director Luehring three years ago. Nebraska will play every Valley school twice, once at Lincoln and again away from home. No non conference games have been sched uled thus far.
