TWENTY SWIMMERS

Prospects for Aquatic Sport
Crow Brighter as More
Men Report.
Prospects for a good swimming
team at Nebraska are growing bright
er every day. Sixteen men answered
the first call for practice last Mon
day night, and several more re
sponded during the week. The total
turnout is twenty men.
Coach Frank Adkins is planning on
six events in the meets that Ne
braska enters this winter. He will
have men in fancy diving, breast
stroke, back stroke, plunging for dis
tance, long distance swim and sprints.
There are seven men competing
for berths in the sprints events.
Among" them are Karl Pimond, Pos
ter Matchet, Donald McAlman, Prank
and Jack Hunton. Five men fcre try
ing for fancy diving. They are Her
bert Ulrich, Frank and Jack Hun
ton, Paul Popejoy, and L. R. Shild-
nock. Two candidates for plunging
for distance are Bill Abbott and
Kenneth Martyn. Dan Reed and
Karl Dimond will enter for back
stroke swimming, and Graebing and
Dan Reed are entered for the breast
stroke. Adkins says he has a pair of
potential distance swimmers in L. R
Shildneck and L. A. Kirkbride.
The swimming sport is three years
old at Nebraska. There were four
men on the first team put out by
Nebraska, and other teams met that
year were the Omaha Athletic club,
Kansas Aggies" and Ames. The sec
ond and third years the squad was
increased to five because of a larger
turnout. This year there will be
from six to ten on the team.
Swimming is an important minor
sport in all Big Ten colleges, as well
as in all big eastern schools. In the
B:g Ten circuit there are as many
as fifteen men on the squad, with
fifty or more candidates. The same
is true of the eastern colleges and
universities where aquatic sports
rival football and basketball in popu
larity. Since its organization three years
ago the swimming sport has been
growing in popularity. At present
there are about sixty students "reg
istered in the University swimming
classes at the Y.M.C.A. The univer
sity is handicapped greatly in this
sport by the lack of a pool.

GOOLIDGE ENDORSES
GOLDEN RULE SUNDAY
Day to Be for Benefit of Near
East Relief Work.
President Coolidge in a letter
made public today by Charles V.
Vickery, general secretary of near
east relief, endoises the plan for ob
serving December 2 as International
Golden Rule Sunday.
Plans for the day, as outlined by
a recent international conference in
Geneva, call upon people of fourteen
different countries to serve a menu
in their homes similar to that served
in orphanages in the Near East, the
difference in cost of the orphanage
menu and the ordinary meal to be
contributed to orphanage work over
sea. The president's letter says:
"It is with a good deal of satis
faction that I commend your pro
posal to observe an International
Golden Rule dinneV Sunday, on the
d if December. I92S. I feel
sure that this suggestion will meet
with verv widespread approval and
will bring more closely to mind the
charitable requirements of those who
are propserous to those who are in
adversity. It suggests not only a
practical method for help, but the
highest expression of sympathy, by
sharing for a time the privations of
others. Cordially yours,
"CALVIN COOLIDGE."
Mr. Vickrey said that among the
notable people abroad, who will co
operate to give the day an interna
tional aspect ar ex-Fremier Cie
