the latter are practically unknown in
America, and the death rate from
diphtheria is from two to four out
of every hundred cases.
France failed to build the Panama
canal because she did not know how
to fight malaria and yellow fever,
Dean Cutter said. When the project
was started, the most expert engi
neers in the world were secured and
a great amount of money was ex
pended. Inside of one month 20,000
men had died from these two dis
eases, and neither foreigner nor na
tive would go near the zone.
Louis Pasteur, the French educa
tor and chemist, was responsible for
the first impeus in the fight against
disease. Up until about 1860 the
theory of spontaneous generation,
that life could spring from inorganic
matter, was generally accepted. To
Pasteur the theory was absurd, and
with the aid of sterilized and unster
ilized beef juices, he proved that the
fermentation of the unsterilized juice
was caused by bacteria in the air.
The French chemist is also re
sponsible for the principle of vaccin'
ation.

silk industry was saved for France
He is also the originator of the pro
cess of keeping milk, known as pas
teurization. One of his assistants.
a chemist named Roux, discovered
the principles of antitoxin.
When the United States sent thou
sands of troops to Cuba during the
Spanish-American war, they had to
fight Asiatic cholera as well as the
Spanish troops, continued Dean Cut
ter. Every bit of food and water
which was given the American sol
diers was filled with the germs of
that disease. Because of the close
observance of orders to boil all water
and cook all food thoroughly, Amer
ican troops did not contract cholera.
Howard T. Ricketts, a University
of Nebraska graduate of 1894, was
a martyr to the fight against dis
ease, Dean Cutter said. Going to
Mexico City where typhus fever was
causing the deaths of many people,
Ricketts established a laboratory. He
discovered that the typhus germs
were carried by a body louse, and
did much to combat it. Some years
later he contracted the disease and
died.
Among other disease fighters,
Dean Cutter mentioned Joseph Lis
ter, an Edinburgh surgeon who first
used carbolic acid to disinfect wounds
and Walter Reed, an American army
surgeon who lost his life in finding
that mosquitoes carried the yellow
fever germs.
