2 Rules for Burning Coke and
Anthracite Pea or Buckwheat
(e) Carry a deep bed of fuel
even above the level of the fire
door.
(f) Shake the grate to remove
ashes and lower the fuel bed but
stop when the first live coals appear.
(g) Spread a thin layer of anthra
cite over the entire grate and allow
a few minutes for this fuel to ignite.
Next fill the fire pot with coke, and
allow this to brn until blue flame
appears, then add another layer of
anthracite.
(h) After firing and seeing that
the charge is ignited, check off the
draft to the desired , point for slow
burning.
(i) When banking the fire for the
night, use less coke and more anthra
cite, but otherwise fire in the same
manner.
(j) Anthracite pea or buckwheat
can often be used alone with success.
This will happen when the draft is
unusually good and the furnace is
amply large. Small size anthracite
Ignites slowly. It Is best to fire one
half of the grate at a time, allow
ing the first halt of the charge to
ignite before adding the second half.

Anthracite, substituting Block wood
for coke. It is highly Important to
see that the fuel is properly ignited
and giving off flame before closing
off the drafts.
4 Rules for Burning Bituminous
Coal.
(1) Bituminous, or soft coal, will.
as a rule, give out less heat than
anthracite when fired in the ordinary
residence heater. Hence more afr
tention will usually be required when
using soft coal.
(m) A deep fuel bed is desirable.
also, as a rule, more draft by the
dampers.
(n) After the fuel is party burned,
more beat can be obtained by break-
ine up the fire bed with the hoe or
poker if the fuel bed is caked.
(o) Stir up the fire and get it hot
before adding new fuel.
(p) Preliminary to firing a new
charee. push the burned fuel to the
back or sides of the fire box, heaping
it high up on the sides of the fire
box walls. Fire fresh fuel Into the
hole in the hot fuel bed. making it
level with the heaped up burning fue.
(p) After firing check the draft to
make the fire burn slowly, setting
the dampers as found best by exper
ience. r A large charge of 6oft coal will
burn slowly for several hours, giving
out moderate heat. If more heat is
it ran be secured by
breaking up the partly ignited mass
with the fire tools.
(si A little air should be -admitted
throuzh the slides in the fire door
when burning bituminous coal.

Former Cornhusker
Gridiron Star Dies
At Powell, Wyoming
F. E. Wiggins, a star on the Corn
tiker football team in the late
nineties, died recently at Powell. Wyo.
He was graduated from the College
of Arts in 1S96 and from the College
of Law twoTears later. He has lived
in Wyoming for the last twelve years.
People who saw him play on the
Scarlet and Cream squad In the early
days will recall his ability to carry
the plgsskin for long end runs. He
belonged to the old ranks that help
put football 'in the University as the
major sport.
He was a prominent citizen In
Powell, having been president of the
Park County farm bureau, president
of the board of education, president of
the water users' association, and
teacher of a large Bible class for men
in the Powell Presbyterian church.

Soon after Christmas comes the
final tryouts for the Varsity teams.
It is believed at the present time
that there will be a tryout before
each meet. Dr. Clapp said, "From
now on, the men are going to get

from last year: Captain S. A. Trout
man, 175 pounds and winner of first
place In his weight at the Individual
meet at Columbus last year; Reed,
158 pounds, last year's captain, and
C. A. Thomas, 145 pounds, and win
ner of third place In last year's In
dividual meet. Promising wrestlers
now are: Isaacson, 135; Renner
heavyweight. Skinner, 145. Besides,
Prof. Lauise Pound of the depart
ment of English Is the author of an
article entitled "Intentional Misrep
resentations of hte Central West,"
which Is given initial place in the
fall cumber of Dialect Notes, Just Is

season is over. Coach Dawson wants
all football men to go out for wrest
ling for their own benefit In football.
Coach Roper of Princeton, it seems,
requires all football men to take
wrestling and has a special instruc
tor for that purpose.
One of the families consisted of an
old man and his wife. The second
was a famiiy of seven, the father be
ing ill and unable to work. The third
was a widow with four children who
had been quarantined. Before the
Illness of the children, the mother has
earned money by scrubbing floors.
