The keen competition which Ne
braska men encountered at Chicago
Is shown by the fact that In the 100
yard dash all of the men have done
10 seconds or better. In the shot put
there was t-.nt a difference of a little
more than n foot In the first and fifth
place. The same length separated
the entnvifs in the broad jump. A
man in "'pst money" was little be
hind the winner in any event.
Captain Smith has beaten the rec
ords made by Paulu, of tirlnncll, in
both the 100-yard and 220-yard dashes.
In the Missouri Valley meet, Smith
made ! 4-5 seconds in the 100 yard
dash. He beat Puulu a good four ft et.
Paulu made the distance In 9 9-10 sec
onds at Chicago. In the 220, Smith
beat Paulu again In the Valley meet
on the 220-yard straightaway. Heset
a new Valley record of 21 3 10 sec
onds. Four of the Ave officials
clocked him hv 21 2-5 seconds. The
fifth registered 21 4-5 seconds and
they all agreed to compromise. Paulu
won the Chicago race in 21 4-5 sec
ond around a turn. His time un
doubtedly would have been faster on
a straightaway.
But for the slip-ups of officials,
there is little doubt but that Smiih
would have placed a high man in each
of the events. Smith bas done both
distances faster than the Chicago tlmo
and were he in proper condition he or third In each event thus placing
probably would havo placed a second Nebraska In sixth or seventh place
