District)
Konuld U. Voder, '22, is an honor
student. He took part In inter-club
debates last year and this. He is go
ing to the University of Nebraska
and will practice law.
Arnold R. Bruhm, 22, has atained
honor rank as scholar. He has been
an inter-club debater this year. He
will attend either the University of
Nebraska or the University of Wis
consin. He is going Into Journalism
Victor Peterson, '22, has been an
inter-club debator for two years. He
expects to attend Northwestern uni
versity and to go into law.
George E. Williams, '23 (alternate),
has also engaged in

District)
Leslie J. Monk, '22 is on the Un
versity Place team for the secon
M. E. church paper, is in the senior
play and in the Glee club, and Is
member of .the Dramatic club.
Floyd H . Schneider, '22 (alternate)
has an excellent scholarship record.
He is member of the Forensic club
and the Dramatic club. He is going
to college to prepare for business.
Holdrege (Southwestern)
.Charles Markwood Bruce, '22, Is a
new member of the Holdrege team.
He intends to study law. He will en
ter the University of Nebraska next
fall.
Dene Darr Hodges, '23, will also
attend the University of Nebraska in
preparation for practicing law. This
is his first year in interscholastic de
bating.
Paul Laverne Copeland, '22 was
second speaker on the Holdrege dis
trict championship team which tied
Wayne for second honors in the 1921
state debate tournament. He 13 go
ing to attend the University -of Ne
braska and will study law.
'North Platte (Western District)
Robert V. Hoagland, '23, (alternate)
is a new member of the team. He in-

Wayne (Northeastern District)
Paul Bowen, '23, and Prof. O. R.
Bowen of the Wayne Normal school,
has an excellent scholarship record.
This is his first year on the team.
He expects to attend the University
of Nebraska and will probably go in
to law.
Ben Moran, '22, has an especially
high scholarship record in history
He was captain of the 1920-1921 bas
ketball team and of the 1921 football
team. He is a new member of the
team. He is planning to attend
Creighton university next year.
Yaldemar Peterson, '22, was on
Wayne's district championship tam
in the 1921 state debate tournament
which tied oldrege for second hon
ors. He is captain of the basketball
team. He will attend the Wayne
normal school two years, then the
University of Nebraska.
Dix (Northwestern District)
Edith Maurice Swanson, '23, form
erly attended school at Denver. She
expects to enter Denver university.
Maud Elenora Peterson, '22, has
completed the high school course in
three years. She is going to college
an intends to specialize in science
and mathematics.
Amanda Peters, '23, attended school
at Cheyenne and Casper, Wyo., She
expects to enter Denver university.
Superior (Southern District)
Clarence K. C.ittings, '22, is on the
Superior team for the third year. He
won the state declamatory contest
in 1919. He will attend the Univers
ity of Arizona.
Maurice L. Henderson, 22 has been
on the team two years. He is going
to college to prepare for law or banking.
Robert M. Scoular, '22 is a new
member of the Superior team. He
is going to attend the University of
Nebraska.
Beatrice (Southeastern District)
Wayne Waddell, '23, will cover the
hlL'h school course in three years. He
has been president of his class all
three years. He was charter memner
of the Forensic dub. He won first
olace in the 1922 declamatory con
test of the southeastern section.
Earl Adams, jr., '22 will finish the
course in three years. This is his
second year on the debate team. He
was an organizer of the Forensic
dub. won first place in the South
eastern district declamatory contest
in 1921, and has the leading pan. in
the senior play. He is going to col
lege next year to take the .business
administration course.
Arnold Van Borkum. '22 has a fine
scholarship record. He is a new mem
ber of the debate team. He Is going
to co-.1ge next fall to prepare for
busings. 'Iff is secretary of the
Forensic club, editor of the Centenary
Ur.i- n sity of Nebraska to prepare
Louis Alexander Breternitz, '23,
public speaking this year. He intends
to practice law. He will attend the
University of Nebraska.
Greeley (West-Central District)
Mary Bolin, '23, is the leading
year on the debating team. She in
tends to go to college.
Lawrence Brannen, 22, is a new
member of the team. He is going
to college to prepare for the practice
of the law.
Marjorie Fitzzpatrick, '22, was mem
ber of the Greeley district champion
ship team in the 1921 state debate

Rules For Deciding Forensic Con
tests are Changed by Prof.
Fogg
New Instructions to the judges of
the State debate of the Nebraska
High, School Debating League are In
force this year. These instructions,
formulated by Prof. M. M. Fogg on re
quest of the League, are designed to
emphasize substance analysis, use of
evidence, readiness in off-hand refuta
tion and rebuttal.
The instructions are:
I. The award shall be made not on
the merits of the question, that is,
not on which side is inherently the
stronger, which side the judge hap
pens to believe, but on the merits ot
the debating; on the selection, us-;
and presentation of material. That is,
which team has made the more of its
opportunities ns debaters has done
the more effective debating.
II. In deciding which toam has done
the more effective debating, the judge
shall consider both thought and form;
but more weight shall be given to
substance than to form (rhetoric style
and speaking). If one team excel In
substance and the other to an equal
degree in presentation, the decision
shall go to the former team.
A. In estimating the substance
the thinking attention will, of course.

directness, good taste, ease) of the
