L. Mencken remarks in the book columns of the May number r the Smart Set, "Why the native Am erican tongue of Americans and Eng lishmen is so grossly neglected by our students is one of the mysteries of scholarship. ... In the United States, once you have mentioned Dr. Louise Pound and Dr. G. P. Knapp, you have exhausted the list of those who have contributed anything to the study of it as a living speech. Twelve Years Ago Today At a meeting of the Missouri Valley conference a resolution was intro duced providing for abolishment of football from the represented institu tions. The debate on the resolution lasted all morning but was finally de feated. Six Years Ago Today Nearly one thousand visitors were show-n the work of the engineers in their laboratories on University night. Five Years Ago Today Nebraska University showed her loyalty to the cause of the war by a huge parade and program. Speeches were made by Governor Neville, Re pent Miller and representative stu dents and alumni. Mildred Smith and Dorothy Abts of Columbus and Florence Hutton of Hastings are visiting at the Kappa Alpha Theta house this week-end. TRY0UTS FOR DRAKE RELAYS HARD FOUGHT (Continued front Page One.) the Kiwanis club of this city has been granted permission by the United Statos government to use radio tnstru monts with a wave length of 360 met ers in broadcasting the results of the Drake relay meet April 28 and 29. This is the first time in the history of athletes that the result of such a moot has been flashed through the air by wireless as rapidly as the events are concluded. Colleges and universities In nearly twenty statos have announced that re ceiving sots are being installed in order to receive the results o th neot. because the broadcasting of mes sages over a 860 meter radius Is on trary to government statutes, it was necessary that special permission be scoured. Opening Day Events Events on Friday, the opening day of the meet,- will be run in the fol lowing order: 100 yard flash prelim inaries; first section Class "B" half mile high school relay; second sec tion Class B" half mile high school relay; two mile class "B" high school relay; class "B" high school shuttle race; university and colege 120 yard high hurdle preliminaries; calss "B" high school mile relay, 440 yard low hurdle university and college prelimin aries and ;lass "B" high school med ley race. The following order of events will be maintained on Satui-day, the main 'lay of the "Western Olympic" meet: class "A" high school half mile re lay, first and second sections; two mile relay, class "A" high schools; 120 yard high hurdles, university and college; two mile relay, university! final in university and college 100 yard dash; two mile May, college; 440 yard low hurdles, universities and ool lescs; one mile relay, class "A" high schools; university 440 yard relay In two sections; university four mile re lay; high school shuttle race, class "A"; grade school shuttle race; col lege one mile relap; university half mile relay, two sections; high school mjedjey race, class "A"; one mile special match race; college half mile relay; university one mile relay in two sections. Finals in the college and university field events will be held Saturday afternoon in eonootlon with the track events.
